When text wraps within a cell it disappears unless the row has extra
depth. I can individually change the height of each affected row but is
there a way to make it happen automatically? I couldn't find a way to do
it.

Try changing whatever style/effect applies so that the row does NOT
have Fixed Height selected?

Thanks. That worked.

I had looked at that setting before and was confused by it. The Effects
box with Row selected had the check box next to Fixed height clear. I
interpreted that to mean that it wasn't set. I did notice the greyed out
box with a tick in it, which puzzled me but since it was greyed out I
assumed it wasn't active.

Thinking about it now I realise the box on the left isn't and on/off for
the flag, it is a leave/change command with the current (or desired) state
in the right hand check box.

Even better, not I have made the change I find it is dynamic, so if the
text becomes less than the column width the row shrinks again, whereas
with Eureka ISTR once expanded it stayed expanded.
