Hi there,

Iḿ an 55 year old german with low knowing in english language, so sorry with my mistakes!

I tried to use a second time DispcalGUI with the CH2.

1 Year ago it works well but in the mean time there are a few updates in Manjaro( Arch ) and now DisplayCAL 3.3.2 ends with :

"new_disprd failed with 'Instrument Access failed' "

I asked BASh with  "ENABLE_COLORHUG=1 spotread -yl -D9 ^C" and "fwupdmgr get-devices" -> see attached Files.

What is my mistake?

Happy new year for all over the world

Hi,
ArgyllCMS V1.9.2 opens the ColorHug OK, but the instrument
doesn't seem to reply to the first command (GetFirmwareVersion) -
the USB read times out after 2 seconds. I'm sorry - I have no
idea why that would happen.

I have the same issue, and it makes colorhug2 unusable with argyll or displaycal. It's a newly purchased device with the most recent firmware (2.0.7)

Try using a USB cable with a ferrite core.

Hi,

my ColorHug2 was working fine in the provided live Fedora from USB, but when booted into my regular OS (Mint 18.1) I was always getting the 'Instrument Access Failed'.

Comparing the software versions I've found out that the USB one used Argyll 1.8.3, while in Mint I had 1.9.2.
Downgrading the Argyll to 1.8.3. solved the USB timeout issue for me.

Be sure to double check what Argyll version you're using. At first, when trying to downgrade Agryll I've installed the deb package v1.8.3 (which puts the binaries into /usr/bin), but the DisplayCal log still indicated v1.9.2.
That was because DisplayCal downloaded Argyll 1.9.2 on the first launch into ~/Downloads/Argyll_V1.9.2/bin/ and still used it, regardless of the system package.
So you may need to point DisplayCal to the correct Argyll version (File > Locate Argyll CMS Executables).

Cheers,
Peter

Downgrading isn't a long term solution. I can't see any problems
with 1.9.2 and the ColorHug 1/2 in my testing - they both work
fine on my test system. So it would help if someone with the problem
is able to diagnose it. What does "spotread -D8" produce for instance ?

I just tripped over what appears to be the same problem: "instrument
access failed" errors when attempting to calibrate, using either the
command-line dispcal or the gui wrapper. All software is the version
present today in Debian unstable, and I have a ColorHug v1. The gui
"Colorhug Firmware Updater" says "ColorHug Detected, Firmware version
1.2.3, There are no updates available". argyll is version 1.9.2.

It looks to me like the ColorHug is not responding to the first real

and continuing again waits for two seconds and then prints the
"Instrument initialisation failed with 'Communication protocol
breakdown' (Invalid address)!" error.

Does that help any? I need to go home now but I will be able to poke
at this more tomorrow - just tell me what you want me to try.

N.B. this is a 64-bit system, incorrectly identified as "Linux 32-bit"
because (if I'm reading this code correctly) numlib/numsup.c includes
aconfig.h before either icc.h or numsup.h, so __P64__ is not defined
and ARGYLL_BUILD_STR is set wrong. Fortunately, that appears to be
the only place in the entire codebase that actually *uses* __P64__ ;-)

Add'l: after downgrading to the version of argyll in Jessie (1.6.3), I
was able to calibrate my monitor with no problems, using dispcalgui.
Changing out the USB cable, on the other hand, did not help at all.

Not directly, since the transaction times out, which typically indicates
a hardware fault or a breakdown of USB protocol between the host and
the instrument (something that happens far to frequently - I wish USB had been
designed to be less fragile).

If it used to work, then this hints at a change in one of:
The USB host driver.
The USB instrument hardware/driver.
The application (ArgyllCMS user mode driver).

If ArgyllCMS V1.8.3 still works, then this indicates
that there's been some accidental or deliberate change
in the USB options being used or sequence of USB
initialization operations, that has had the side effect
of sending the USB host or USB instrument into a lockup state.

So if I were able to reproduce the problem, I'd be checking
out what has changed in the USB options/setup, and seeing if
changing any of them gets it working again.
Often this comes down to one of the set_usb_port() flags needing
to be set/not set for certain platforms, or even
host driver version.
Note though, that the flags haven't changed for the ColorHug driver
between 1.8.3 and 1.9.2.

First thing I'd try is setting the icomuf_no_open_clear flag.

Hi @ all.

Long time ago and i din´t tried , but last week mc Linux PC changed it´s place in the Flat and yesterday i´ve tried again.

And it works. I´ve make one run with the same unit and cable and had no fault.

so i think there is an mistake with Manjaro and in the meantime it will be changed so it will work now.

So Thank u all for your work .

Hi,

Missing a bit of context, but the title of this thread refers to a bug that was fixed some time ago in argyllcms (released in 2.0.1).

Regards,
Bruno
