Hey all,

With the discussion in the other thread about resupply points and restock plans, I thought I'd put together a list of store hours. Sorry to the pre-riders for not getting this out sooner.

Here's a link to a Store Hours Google Sheets document. I tried copying the table into this post, or taking a screenshot, but couldn't get the formatting to behave. So I hope the shared document works. Feel free to add comments.

One thing to note: it looks like most services in Hot Sulphur Springs will be closed when we ride through. Same with Rand. So stock up with food in Kremmling for the 78 miles back to Walden, and it looks like we can top off our water at the town park in Hot Sulphur Springs. If anyone has better intel than Google Maps, let me know!

Thanks,
David

This is awesome David! About what time do we start on Day 1? How about the following days from Walden?

I like to game plan my rides. I’m not tied to this obviously. But it helps me to have a rough idea of what may happen.

This Google Sheet shows when I should arrive at each resupply stop, where the controls are, the distance and total ascent and clock time duration between those stops, and when I’ll probably be back at the hotel each day.

Based on David’s awesome store hours sheet, I may adjust a couple of these stops. THANKS DAVID!

The event departs at 5:00 am on Sunday, 6/23.

(And thanks very much, David, for putting together the store hours. I'll add this to the website.)

Might be helpful for your planning…

Good news:

  • DAY 1&4: I called the Moose Visitor Center and there is drinking water available 24x7. That is at mile 166 and 619.

Important:

  • DAY 2: I called Wycolo Lodge (mile 368). They close early on Mondays. Jason at Wycolo said if I call the number it goes to his cell phone and he would be happy to provide water – he is on-site. WOW! I also called Woods Landing (mile 355). Their café closes at 2pm, but the store stays open until 6:30pm. He told me they would be happy to stay open later if they knew new cyclists were coming by. DOUBLE WOW! He also said there is a water spigot outside (around the employees-only entrance by a green fixture). That is a 62 mile sector with 2900’ climbing (3.5-4+ hour) from mile 330 to the hotel if you don’t take advantage of either of these.

  • DAY 3: I called the Rand Store. They are closed on Tuesdays (mile 575). There is nothing near there. That is a 61-mile sector with 3100’ climbing (3.5-4+ hours) from 536 to the hotel. Might be good to put an extra bottle in your jersey pocket at the last stop.

Thanks Dave - I've updated the shared document. I'm glad others are getting some use out of it.

Regarding your question for departure times from Walden: it looks like most of the riders in 2021 left Walden sometime between 3:30am and 5am (a little later on the last day). This year's pre-riders left yesterday morning (day 2) at 5am (not sure about this morning). That matches my very rough plan to leave around 4am each morning - but I wouldn't mind sleeping in a bit more if possible ;) I'm sure we'll all adjust our ETD(s) depending on all of the variables.

Thanks,
David

David,

I’ve been researching resupply opportunities.  Some additional information I’ve come up with (haven’t updated the Google Doc, would like someone to verify I’m correct):

Rustic: I called them yesterday. Was told the restaurant and the store open at 0800 Wednesday

Woods Landing: I called them too. Was told they’re open until 1800.

Hot Sulphur Springs: Google Maps shows the Sinclair station is open until 2200.

Thanks. The stuff is VITAL on these long stretches.

David W.,

I can’t find the “town park” in Hot Sulphur Springs that is a potential water source on Google Maps. For the sake of us east coasters, Is it that campground on the west side of town? If not, can you maybe give the cross street?

Thanks. I think that will complete my logistics plan.

Here are my ride cheat sheets. Everyone will make up their own ride plan, but this might help some of you.

I print these and put it them a zip lock in my top tube bag to keep my resupply stops and segment insights top of mind.

On Day 2 I listed Wood’s Landing and Wycolo – I’ll only need one of those.

Hey Jack,

Thanks for additional info - I've updated the document.

The Hot Sulphur Springs Town Park is just north of Cedar St., and the restrooms they are referring to is on the corner of Cedar and Maple. I've added that link to the document. Here's a good view on Google Street. I'm hoping the gas station will be open, but that drinking fountain is a nice backup.

Thanks,
David

P.S. in case anyone is interested, the Tour Divide started this morning. Their route will more or less parallel our route for about 75 miles between Steamboat and Kremmling, so keep your eyes out for some exhausted and dirty bikepackers, especially at stores in Kremmling.

All,

THE SINCLAIR IN HOT SULPHUR SPRINGS CLOSES AT 1900

(The chat list won’t let me post there, hence this email)

Once they disconnected their phone line from a fax machine, I was able to call the Sinclair Station in H.S.S. and speak to a human. She told me that, contrary to what is posted on Google Maps, they close at 1900.

Thanks for the info on the water fountain, its a nice backup. Failing those, I think I could talk one of the motels in town into letting me fill up my bottles.

Get enough food in Kremmling to carry with you and get you home.

Very cool David! TransAm could potentially cross our paths too. Their route overlaps from Saratoga to Kremmling going right thru Walden!

  • RED: The 4200-mile TransAm race (started in Oregon on June 2nd)
  • LIGHT BLUE: The 2670-mile Tour Divide race (started in Banff June 14th)
  • DARK BLUE: The 3000-mile RAAM race (started in Oceanside June 11th)
  • BLACK: The 750-mile CHC1200 (plus Pikes Peak and Mt Evans)

Hi All,

I'm not sure if John Lee linked you to Rashid's report of our pre-ride of the 1000k, but if not just wanted to add a note about the store in Hot Sulphur Springs. When we went through there was a note on the door that they had closed that day at 2pm and it was locked up tight. We filled bottles from a tap around the west side of the building, but had no resupply for food between Kremmling and Walden, so be sure to plan for that possibility.

It is a beautiful and scenic course-I hope you all have a great ride!

My plan is the gas Station. Open 7 days a week 6am to 10pm.

Hi Dave,

While it appears on Google maps that the Mini Merc and Sinclair are two different places, they are in fact the same building and business. As someone earlier on the thread mentioned, the hours on google are wrong, and they close at seven, except for when they close early, which based on our experience on the pre-ride as well as a few Google reviews is fairly often. So, I wouldn't depend on it, and recommend rolling out of Kremmling with enough food to get you back to Walden, treating it as a bonus if it ends up being open.

Cheers,
Jenn

Good advice! Thanks, Jenn.

Also, there are stores at the junction of US-40 and US-34 outside Granby, 1.9 miles beyond the turnoff to Hwy. 125.  3.8 extra miles may not be appealing, but just something in case you really need food/drink, etc.
