Hi all,

I need your help. I work a ton with logic models, as the director of research for a policy organization and often have my staff and constituents complete them to clarify their work and develop an actionable, measurable plans. However as helpful as the tool is in thinking through things, I find that sometimes people get so caught up on the challenges of filling out the tool  itself is actually a barrier to executing it. I've used templates in both word and Excel but haven't found one easy to work with. I've found that the University of Wisconsin Extension is the best one but I still would like to find something better. Does anyone have a favorite template or tool you could point me to?

Thanks so much for your help!

Hi Katie,

I too have had difficulty finding a tool to build logic models that is easy to use. I don't have a great solution but I have a "go-to" that I have been using when I just need something simple. I have been using Smart Art in Microsoft PowerPoint to build the Logic Model columns. You can add arrows in later (if necessary), but for the most part just the columns have been helpful for most basic purposes. I've attached an example so you can see what it looks like when completed. Hope this is helpful, and would love to hear if you get any other responses to your question that might be helpful!

Thanks!

Hi all,

I teach a logic model class to a few different audiences and I have found that nothing works as well as yellow stickies and a big piece of poster paper.

Once people have the freedom to think with their hands, the ideas flow about cause and effect, and those ideas are logical! Once that process is complete, any tool will do.  After all, the thinking is the hard part.

It may sound time-consuming, but it saves time in the end.

Maggie,

Thanks for the comment this is what we do too. My problem comes with getting it documented and updating things after the fact. Any tricks for what to do once you finish the work?

Katie: have you considered posting your question to evaltalk? There are a bunch of people who read evaltalk every day, and I bet there may be someone out there who may know of any tool. If you want, I can help you post to evaltalk (there are others at COEN who know how to post to evaltalk)

Antonio is correct, I have been saving logic model conversations for a long time.  I can forward them to you if you like.
