There is a big difference between “what works” with convicted individuals and what is known to work for individuals in pretrial, where there has been much less research attention. Applying the RNR framework to pretrial practices may improve release decisions by incorporating dynamic risk factors and fostering more personalized and effective “coaching” of defendants on supervision. This article explores the application of the RNR and coaching model in pretrial settings, examining its potential to create fairer, more effective, and more efficient pretrial practices while maintaining public safety and respecting the rights of the accused.
