A note from Herbert from the top floor of our building:
We've been spending a lot of time in the top-floor conference room of our studio's building lately. We held our Audio Production 101 workshops here. And our PSA Writing and Voicing workshops. We've also been meeting here to work on scripting for our audio documentary project, HABITUAL. (That's a podcast series that you can tune into in 2026. But more on that some other day!)
We're chillin here right now, actually, working on plans for our WAVES OF IMPACT Party.** The view is pretty dope. You can see all of downtown and the mountains. It's like: this is who we're doing this work for - all of Colorado.
There's more about the party, and other news, in today's newsletter:

Thanks for reading - and for listening (which you can do 24/7, right here!).

CRJ Co-Director Seth Ready was in Vienna, Austria in mid-November, as a member of the United Nations Expert Group Meeting addressing and editing the working draft of the U.N. Handbook on Emerging Technologies in Custodial Settings. The document is part of ongoing implementation of the U.N.'s Nelson Mandela Rules, and the meeting was an action item of the U.N.'s 2025 Year of Action on Penal Reform.
Seth says: "It was a humbling experience sitting amongst some of the top carceral rights minds from around the globe. The group included voices from academia, the private sector, non-governmental organizations, prison administrators and corrections officials, and one person with lived experience: me! I was the first formerly incarcerated person to be invited into this conversation.
"Not only was I able to provide feedback in many areas of the Handbook, I was ultimately given the floor to discuss the work of CRJ past, present, and future! I highlighted the healing power of radio within prisons, not just between residents, but also between residents and staff. I also shared how this work is beneficial to broader communities as well, bridging communication gaps from one side of the wire to the other.
"And of course I brought my recorder with me. I conducted interviews with group members from around the world, and I plan to work with the CRJ team to create a feature that shares the work of this group and offers context on the Nelson Mandela Rules. So... stay tuned for that.
"The gravity of this journey last month still hasn't fully settled on me. For now, I wanted to let you know: I made it back safely, learned tremendously, and represented accordingly!"
Once again, we offer big thanks to our friends at Prison Radio International, where CRJ is an affiliate organization, for recommending Seth and CRJ for this U.N. gathering.

"Audio Production 101" Workshops were a success!
In November, we hosted two "Audio Production 101" workshops. These were an opportunity for system-impacted Coloradans to gather at the Digital Audio Workstation and get a hands-on taste of how to create original audio, from soup to nuts. The sessions were facilitated by CRJ Associates Tongjai Lee and TaTiana Torres. Some of our familiar CRJ featured hosts - who are eager to go from "just" hosting to production - took the workshop, as well as some creators who are new to the CRJ circle. We loved mixing and mastering with each of you!

CRJ Soundwaves: Hotlines,
featuring The Alternatives To Violence Project
This week on HOTLINES, it's a conversation with the team from Colorado's chapter of The Alternatives to Violence Project. Emerging as a response to the Attica Prison riots in New York in the 1970s, The Alternatives To Violence Project now has an international reach. In this HOTLINES episode, you'll learn about AVP's work with residents in two of Colorado's prisons, and beyond.
HOTLINES is our weekly show featuring reentry resources and more, hosted by CRJ's Seth Ready and co-hosted and -produced by Carol Peeples from Remerg, Colorado's reentry resource hub. You can listen on CRJ's airwaves at 9am and 9pm every weekday... and find it here or wherever you get your podcasts.

Colorado Radio for Justice recently hosted a Conversation and Listening Party, "Parenting & Prison," as part of the Redline Contemporary Arts Center's HIGH WALLS Summit in Denver.
Participants and presenters reflected on the complex journey of parenting during and after prison: Herbert Alexander from Colorado Radio for Justice shared audio excerpts of his award-winning audio documentary, "Incarcerated Dads." Pam Clifton from Colorado Criminal Justice Reform Coalition shared excerpts from her book 'Tell Them You Love Them: An Incarcerated Parent's Resource Guide.' And Kalena Rodriguez from Unbreakable Ministries and Built to Recover shared a piece of writing from her son, offering context to her work providing support to parents who are, or have been, incarcerated or detained.
