My name is Kimberly Ingold, and I am a graduate student at Illinois State University studying Criminal Justice Sciences. I have Bachelor's degrees in both Psychological Science and Criminal Justice & Criminology along with a minor in Women's and Gender Studies. For my Master's thesis, which is conducted under the supervision of Dr. Jessie Krienert, I will be researching how, if at all, the mothers of individuals forced to register (commonly referred to as registered sex offenders) are socially stigmatized due to their relation to that individual.
I'm also the family member of a registrant, and have seen first-hand how their arrest and conviction negatively impacts the lives of those close to them. However, little empirical research appears to have ever been completed on this topic - with no research having been done specifically on mothers. This research is important, as it will potentially validate the negative experiences that these women face due to forces outside of their control and give mental health practitioners a better understanding of how to help these women.
Would you be willing to review a short questionnaire and consider distributing it to your mailing list once it has been approved by the Institutional Review Board? Approval is expected within the next few weeks. If not, are there any resources that you would recommend in order to help me gather participants?
