Hi, Activists and World-Changers Across Colorado ~

During an interview on FOX31 last Sunday, Governor John Hickenlooper talked about the careful, thoughtful process he has gone through in rethinkng his former stance on the death penalty and why he's now officially against it:

“...you get all this information: it costs 10 times, maybe 15 times more money to execute someone than to put someone in prison for life without parole. There’s no deterrents to having capital punishment......And I don’t know about you, but when I get new facts, I’ll change my opinion. I didn’t know all of this stuff. ....there’s not a single country in Europe or South America or Mexico or Israel or Australia — none of these countries support the death penalty any more, and there are good reasons for it.”

We at Coloradans for Alternatives to the Death Penalty appreciate the Governor's considered approach to such an important issue that affects so many people in so many ways.  And we also appreciate that he came to same inevitable conclusion that we all have - - that the death penalty is a policy that costs far too much, is arbitrarily applied, is biased economically and racially and geographically in our state, and has killed innocent people who were wrongly convicted of capital crimes.

Please take a moment to express your gratitude to Governor Hickenlooper for taking a principled, courageous stance on this issue during a challenging time - - you can copy this link to the Governor's homepage to communicate with him directly.

And stay tuned for upcoming activities promoting a just and fair Colorado, including participation in the International Day of Peace / Troy Davis Execution Observation on September 21st (a day to call for just and peaceful approaches to crime and conflict).

With love,

Carla & the CADP Team
