Condolences to friends and family of Correctional Staff lost to COVID-19

ACA’s leadership, staff and members extend sympathy and condolences to friends and family of all corrections officers and employees who have fallen ill or passed away due to the COVID 19 pandemic since the January February 26th issue of ACA Connect. Below are recent losses due to COVID-19. To see all who lost their lives, please visit ACA’s Wall of Honor and join us in mourning these professionals who put their lives on the line every day to protect our communities and those under their charge:

Tracey Adams, Correctional Officer III, Stiles Unit in Beaumont, Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TX)

Stacy Crosby, Engineering Specialist III, Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TX)

Woodrow “Buddy” Dowdy, Master Officer, Virginia Capitol Police (VA)

With the heightened risk of attending work and being in close quarters with both staff and inmates, the bravery and necessity of our correctional workers has never been clearer.

Correctional Agencies on the Front Lines of the Fight against COVID-19

In addition to performing their duties in extremely trying circumstances, correctional agencies around the country are stepping up to provide relief to medical workers and the public at large. Take a look at the great work done by correctional agencies since our February 26th ACA Connect:

[Colorado] Fremont County health director: COVID-19 cases continue to go down.

Thoughts and prayers are with our friends and colleagues in Texas and Mississippi

Please continue to pray for our friends and colleagues as they get through the disaster dealing with the weather that has affected many of them. We are praying for the safety of all!

Congratulations to Jeff Butler for being selected as Warden of El Dorado Correctional Facility

Kansas Department of Corrections Secretary Jeff Zmuda announced today that Jeff Butler has been selected to serve as the warden of El Dorado Correctional Facility. Butler begins his new role on March 1. Jeff brings a wealth of knowledge and leadership experience gained during a successful career working with the Federal Bureau of Prisons,” said Jeff Zmuda, KDOC secretary. “This experience, and his work at EDCF as deputy warden since 2019, make him the right choice to assume the duties of warden,” said Secretary Zmuda. Butler began his corrections career as a correctional officer with the Federal Bureau of Prisons in 1989 and was promoted through the ranks of case manager, unit manager and associate warden until he retired in 2016.

Congratulations to Henry Nordan for being named Warden of Southern Correctional Institution

The Division of Adult Correction and Juvenile Justice has named Henry Nordan as the new Warden at Southern Correctional Institution in Troy. Nordan, 43, had been the South-Central Region Security Specialist since 2016. Warden Nordan is a remarkable professional with the proven and tested skills needed to manage a complex prison,” said Todd Ishee, Commissioner of Prisons. “His range of experience and his commitment to the job makes him an outstanding addition to the team of dedicated men and women who run our prisons. In his new position, Nordan is responsible for all operations at Southern Correctional, a male close custody facility that also houses a substantial number of chronically ill offenders.

Congratulations to Tina Litz for being named Warden of Lebanon County Correctional Facility

Lebanon County Correctional Facility has a new warden. At their Jan. 21 meeting, the county   commissioners promoted Tina Litz to the position, where she replaces the retiring Robert Karnes. A 25-year Lebanon County employee, she was most recently deputy warden for treatment at the prison… Litz, 44, who was selected from 14 applicants, took over as warden Feb. 8. I always was drawn to the criminal justice system — I grew up on the north side of Lebanon. I saw a lot of good and bad things happen and I just had a drive to want things to be better and people to do better. I started working at Lebanon County Correctional Facility at age 19 and worked part time as a correctional officer while I went to York College to complete my B.S. in criminal justice and a minor in sociology.

Congratulations to Evelyn Mallard for being named first female Jail Superintendent of Ulster County Jail

Col. Evelyn Mallard said she began working in law enforcement almost "accidentally," but found it a rewarding career that has given her the chance to serve — something she wants to continue to do as the newest superintendent of the Ulster County Jail. Mallard, who sworn in as superintendent on Monday, March 1, is the first woman to hold the position… she began taking classes at Rockland Community College, where she encountered a state police recruiter and decided to join. Mallard went on to make a career in law enforcement, serving 30 years with the state police and three years working part-time with the Orange County Sheriff's Office. By the time she retired from the state police in 2016, she had reached the rank of major.
