FRANCISCAN SANDALS

Franciscans wear sandals as a symbol of humility, poverty, simplicity, and penance—central values in the life of Saint Francis.

Regarding footwear, Saint Francis always walked barefoot, in accordance with Jesus' command to the apostles: "Do not wear sandals..."

Only in the last two years of his life, to conceal the bandages bloodied by the stigmata on his feet, did he have to wear leather or cloth shoes, as can be seen in the relics of Assisi. The Rule only states that friars may wear footwear in cases of necessity. Sandals, however, soon became the norm.
