OK, so I was doing some straightening up and found our old video camera
- - Sony Handycam with the tapes, only has RCA output.
Anyone done anything with transferring from this sort of camera to a
laptop? I have S-video on the laptop but that's the only video input.
I've seen some of the RCA-USB interfaces, but it's unclear how well, if
at all, they work with Linux.
Any thoughts, or other pointers?
Thanks.

I've got an extra fancy one that encodes to mpeg2. Would you like to
meet up and borrow it? I don't mind, my mythtv server is out of pci slots.
Once you have the input selected with v4lctl, it is as simple as:
cat /dev/video > myhomevideo.mpeg
No fooling. From there you can use any encoding software to encode to
whatever you need, or go straight to dvd from there. (dvd is mpeg2)

The camera only has RCA output, so firewire won't do me much good :)
Nice to know a program that works if I change cameras in the future, though.

I've seen some RCA-USB stuff that was made by them - any ideas on that
sort of thing?

That's a generous offer, but I'm going to have to decline - I should
have mentioned the only computer I have is my laptop. Works well for
most things, just hard to stick new cards in it.

If you are using a recent kernel it sounds like both of these are plug
and play, and will give you a /dev/video right off the bat. Make sure
you are using usb 2.0 of course.

This one looks like the best bet for what I need. Thanks a lot for the
info, I really appreciate it.
Now to work it in to the budget . . . :)
