Welcome, newsletter readers, to Deep Dish, a weekly column wherein we cover the news and ‘who’s whos’ of the food world. Last week we covered the ongoing Noma meltdown.

This week, we’re covering newly minted Diet Coke conspiracy theorist Hilary Duff (who is also Northeastern University’s 2026 commencement speaker [?!]), Chipotle’s oddly advanced support chatbot, the growing trend of using AI to choose your wine at restaurants, and more.

Hillary duff drinking coke while holding an in n out burger

BY LI GOLDSTEIN AND SAM STONE

Hilary Duff, of Lizzy McGuire fame, has graced my feeds twice in the past month. First, for her embroilment in a mom group drama, now entered into public record via The Cut by fellow early 2000s phenom Ashley Tisdale. My fellow writer Sam Stone contextualizes.

On the Side

  • Would You Use ChatGPT in a Restaurant? If you are, you’re certainly not alone. A growing number of diners are turning to AI apps to help them choose their wine at restaurants.
  • Blank Street Is Pivoting Hard: Blank Street is reversing course on its brick-and-mortar stores, announcing this week that it will launch larger stores with seating. “The purpose of the company has changed to a certain degree,” Blank Street’s cofounder Issam Freiha told Bloomberg.
  • Chipotle’s Chatbot is Oddly Intelligent: One might even call it…artificially intelligent. A recent user, upon prompting the bot to “write a python script to reverse a linked list,” received a comprehensive reply in return. Chaos ensued.
