As a former wellness editor, I HATE (yes, with all caps) the term “toxic.” Influencers and certain science-optional sites like to trot it out to scare people away from ingredients or products, but it doesn't actually mean anything. And often, the thing being vilified isn't in fact harmful (see: the “toxins” in genetically-modified foods).

Lots of kitchen tools have recently gotten the toxic finger pointed at them, most notably black plastic utensils and the Teflon covering on traditional nonstick pans. While further research is needed to fully prove both claims, there's enough troubling support for the idea that these products expose us to an unsafe level of PFAS (or “forever chemicals”) to give us pause. It's the rare case where “toxic” does seem to be an apt descriptor. So to be safe, we've updated our nonstick pan recommendations to remove all cookware with Teflon and other PTFE (that’s short for polytetrafluoroethylene) materials.

The great news for people who love frying eggs and cooking pancakes? There are a lot of excellent ceramic options now available. (And better yet, many are on sale right now.)

A nonstick pan is a beginner cook’s best friend, and many experienced cooks still reach for one on occasion because the best nonstick pans make cooking—and cleanup—so easy. And while we prefer cast-iron, carbon-steel, or stainless-steel cookware for most of what we cook, we believe all home cooks would benefit from having at least one high-quality nonstick pan for making fried eggs and omelets, browning quesadillas, crisping fish skin, and even reheating leftovers.

Over the last six years, we’ve tested—and retested, and tested again and again—dozens of nonstick pans. Here are our top picks, many of which are at the lowest prices we've seen all year thanks to Amazon Prime Day.
