Can you smell the maple wafting through the air? It’s probably emanating from your local Trader Joe’s. After all, the TJs autumnal drop is the unofficial start to fall (everyone knows that, right?). Between the baskets of multicolored gourds and placards of amber-toned calligraphy, you’ll find maple ice cream sandwiches, freezer-aisle funnel cake, and more, all vetted and reviewed by contributor Alex Beggs. Read on for the hits and misses.

As of mid-October, there are no new pumpkin products in Trader Joe’s fall lineup. They’ve gone all-in on maple instead. Vaguely interesting! Maybe something pumpkin spicy is on its way, but I’m not mad about most of the new maple snacks, especially the brown butter-coated almonds. They’re cozy, toasty, and in one case, cold-foamy. Also new this fall: lamb—and a lawsuit.
If you’re a Bon Appétit reader who’s been frustrated for the better part of a decade (a decade!) that you can never find ground lamb for Andy Baraghani’s no-notes perfect meatballs, the tides have shifted in the TJ’s meat case. The lawsuit? Has to do with TJ’s dupe of Uncrustables. More on that below, alongside nearly everything the cartoon grocery store introduced this fall, taste-tested and reviewed.
