The Tom and Jerry episode The Cat Concerto, which features Franz Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2., motivated two-year-old Lang to learn the piano.[6][7] He started lessons with Zhu Yafen at age three, won first place at the Shenyang Piano Competition and performed his first public recital when he was five.[8]

When Lang was nine, he was expelled from his piano tutor's studio for "lack of talent".[9][5] Another music teacher at his state school noticed Lang and asked him to play the second movement of Mozart's Piano Sonata No. 10, which reminded Lang of his love for the instrument.[9] Lang later studied under Zhao Ping-Guo at Beijing's Central Conservatory of Music.[10]

Lang's performance style was controversial when he stormed into the classical music scene in 1999. At that time, pianist Earl Wild called him "the J. Lo of the piano."[17] Others have described him as immature, but admitted that his ability to "conquer crowds with youthful bravado" is phenomenal among classical musicians.[18] His maturity in subsequent years was reported by The New Yorker: "The ebullient Lang Lang is maturing as an artist."[18] In April 2009, when Time magazine included Lang in its list of the 100 most influential people, Herbie Hancock described his playing as "so sensitive and so deeply human", commenting: "You hear him play, and he never ceases to touch your heart."[19]

Lang was the featured soloist on the Golden Globe-winning score of The Painted Veil and can be heard on the soundtrack of The Banquet.[23] He has recorded for the Deutsche Grammophon and Telarc labels. His album of the first and fourth Beethoven piano concertos with the Orchestre de Paris and Christoph Eschenbach debuted at No. 1 on the Traditional Classical Billboard Chart.[24] In 2008, he was the pianist on Mike Oldfield's 2008 album Music of the Spheres.[25] In 2010, he signed with Sony for a reported $3 million.[26] Metallica performed the song One alongside Lang at the 56th Annual Grammy Awards in 2014.

Lang has also recorded piano works for the video game Gran Turismo 5's soundtrack, mostly under the "Classical" subgenre.[28] This included versions of Danny Boy, "Scott Joplin's The Entertainer", Beethoven's 8th Piano Sonata, and one of the game's intro pieces, the third movement from Prokofiev's 7th Piano Sonata.

On 7 May 2023, Lang performed at the Coronation Concert, held in celebration of the coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla the day before.[60] Lang played the piano for the song "Reflection", from Disney's 1998 animated film Mulan, accompanied by singer Nicole Scherzinger.[61]

Lang's autobiography, Journey of a Thousand Miles, published by Random House in 8 languages, was released in the summer of 2008. Delacorte Press also released a version of the autobiography specifically for younger readers, entitled Playing with Flying Keys.

A global piano sensation, Lang Lang is no stranger to success and is currently worth an estimated $30 million (22m). As well as selling millions of albums around the world and regularly topping Classical charts, his achievements include a nomination for a 2007 Grammy Award and he was even named one of the 100 most influential people in the world by TIME magazine.

Lang Lang recorded piano works for the soundtrack to the video game Gran Turismo 5. This included versions of the traditional Londonderry Air, and the third movement from Prokofiev's seventh Piano Sonata.

He has real pianistic talent, even if he misuses it. He showed in the opening Schumann piece how controlled and nuanced his phrasing can be, though it felt out of place. He executed variations 5 and 28 with blinding speed and precision, though others were muddled. And he matched his body movements with every beat of every measure, sometimes for comedic effect and sometimes in a state of rapturous flow. Lang Lang seems to have mastered the rules and technique of classical piano, but he chooses to bend them to his leisure.

Not surprisingly, his performance brought thunderous applause and standing ovations; so too, did his piano four-hands piece with Chen. The two played the Hungarian Dance No. 5 by Johannes Brahms. Lang Lang continued a piano four-hands with Fabio Witkowski playing Radetzky March by Johann Strauss, which brought an energetic, exciting finale to the performance.

Lang Lang: Every school can apply online. We have almost one hundred schools apply for our music program every year. Normally we provide a class with 20 to 30 pianos. So we provide them the methods, the money to build a well-equipped music class with about 20 to 30 piano electronic keyboards with the smart function. We will also be creating the method and books for them to study. We provide the whole package. And then, of course, we are working very closely with the music teachers to teach in the same way. So that's what we'll be doing.

With this collection, Lang Lang goes back to his first love - to the pieces that made him want to become a musician in the first place. Rediscovering the most popular and accessible pieces written for learners and lovers of the piano, this album is a journey; of inspiration, of discovery, fantasy and learning. It is a moment for Lang Lang to illuminate these classic pieces as the masterworks they truly are. It is also a reflection on the music that influenced him most during his early childhood, later in life coping with difficult moments, and working with young piano learners around the world. Music can change lives and Piano Book tells this story. "I dedicate this album to my wonderful piano students and all my friends around the world who love the piano as much as I do." Lang Lang.
