While we're at digging up old obsolete drives to recover old data...
Anyone have a working Syquest Syjet (1.5 gb)?
Also, a 3.5" diskette drive - was one ever made with USB?

I got a USB 3.5" floppy drive from the computer place in Zandale for $30. You can get them cheaper online, but I needed it that day and couldn't wait.

No on the syquest. I *might* still have a 135mb one around somewhere. And yes 3.5" usb drives are easy to find online. I have a couple of them (rarely used--but did this weekend)

It would probably be impossible for anyone to have a working Syjet drive anyway [perhaps the 2 I have could be fixed long enough to get some data (that project is put off until sometime in the future though)]. Syquest was bankrupted and went out of business because of the Syjet (1.5 gb disks that cost $50 each), which was put on the market only to last until DVD-R technology came out and as competition to Iomega's more superior product, but it couldn't even last that long, in fact, each drive would not last more than a couple of weeks before the sub-standard glue that was used by the manufacturer (in the vain attempt to save money) melted and ruined the drive (each and every one of them ever sold) - Syquest's return policy meant that every customer sent their drive in to them (all of them) for a replacement. Oops. Iomega bought their remains.

Michael -

Let me know if you find one. We've exhausted our search for our old zip drive.

Thanks a million for offering!  Right now I don't have a way of using an internal drive (I haven't had a PC since 2005).  That being said, I might still be asking to borrow it if I can't find and external drive.

Yep I've got an internal zip 250.  I can donate it to the stash there.  When will somebody be there or can somebody pick it up from me at UK?  I have dinner plans with my favorite new twelve year old this evening.

What kind of interface does the internal version have? IDE? If so, you can get
external enclosures that have a USB interface, and which will mount an IDE
drive inside, for not too many bucks (US$15 +/- 5). I have a couple of them
(although they're all currently in use). Of course, there's some question as to how
standard the IDE interface they present is. I've never had a problem mounting an
IDE harddisk in one and accessing it via the USB connection.

Anyway, it may be an idea.

It is IDE. The last time I used one I bought a USB to IDE cable that had a separate power supply. It also works with sata drives.

Great suggestion on the IDE to USB housing / connector.  It may come to that!

There are also "test kits" that are, essentially, the same thing as one of those external
enclosures, only without the case (e.g., power supply/cables).

I've found it's a good idea to have one of those test kits available, as well as some of
the external cases, just in case you want to mount an unknown drive, and don't want
to have to go to the trouble of opening up the system, fiddling with the existing drive
to set the master/slave jumpers, etc. You can just stick the unknown drive in the
external enclosure or on the test cable, plug it into the USB socket, and go. :-)

Plus, those external hard drive enclosures make it pretty cheap to have TB class
portable data (USB flash keys aren't quite there yet.).

Everyone -

Anyone have a zip 250 drive?

Chris -

Awesome that you have the USB to IDE gizmo! I got a feeling that it will be needed once we figure out the drive. The zip disks are 250mb, so the zip 100 won't work (bummer!).

Michael and Chris -

Looks like, between you, you have the stuff I'm going to need!  AWESOME!   Would it be possible for me to pick up the drive and the USB-IDE connector tomorrow?

gratefully,

- Ben

I'm in the basement of Pence Hall (Architecture/Design building) at UK.  It's behind Chemistry /Physics on Rose so you can drive up to the back of the building and I can hand it off so you don't have to deal with parking.  I should be here all day tomorrow.  Call my cell first 229-1268.  Sometimes I get called to one of our other buildings.
