The CNC router team is going to make the jump from theory to hardware this weekend.  Specifically, we're going to build the base table for the machine.  All the students from this fall's welding class are invited to come out and make sparks.  (everyone else is invited, too, of course!)

We'll meet 10 am Sunday, and work much of the day.  I'm hopeful we can knock the whole thing out in a day...we'll see.  Wear dirty clothes and bring light work gloves.  We should have enough welding masks to go around.

RSVP is appreciated.

We should probably move the gas generator and the propane tank in the back out of the space while we're welding. I'm pretty paranoid about them catching an errant spark and going kaboom.

I hope those tanks are strapped down so that they can't fall over, regardless
of where they're placed. Compressed gas cylinders that fall over seem to
have an abnormally high probably of hitting something on the way down that
causes the valve to be sheared off, producing a rather incredible rocket
(one that has enough energy to punch clean through a 9 inch thick poured
concrete wall and keep going, as happened to a buddy of mine that used to
run a welding shop! He dropped a cylinder as him and a buddy were carrying
it down the stairs into the shop, and it landed on a step just so as to shear
the valve off. WHOOSH! Punched clean through the 9 inch thick concrete wall
on the other side of the shop and, eventually, embedded itself into the
hillside on the other side of the hollow. Oh, and it filled the shop full
of gas vapours, too! Somewhat amazingly, no one was killed or even seriously
injured, although it made one heck of a mess, and there was a lot of underwear
that had to be cleaned! ;-) ).

There's probably not too much chance of a spark igniting a compressed gas
cylinder, as long as the valve isn't leaking, and as long as you aren't
welding on the cylinder itself. But, sometimes, it's good to be paranoid.

Oh, also, use extreme caution around Acetylene cylinders. A cylinder of
pure Acetylene can undergo explosive polymerization and spontaneously
explode. Thus, pure Acetylene isn't stored in cylinders; rather, it's
dissolved in something else, such as Acetone or DMF:

Ok, we now end this educational moment, and return to the general chatter. :*)

I walked into Collexion tonight, and there was a handsome table frame
sitting inside. Nice work, guys!

It's also HUGE. Like, OMG. 10' x 5'.

Hey I didn't think about welding stuff for the shop, that's an awesome idea... should we put together a list of things that we could weld to make some awesome things that could help the space?

Wahoo! It was great to see the progress on the table. I dropped by too, last evening, thinking there might be some labor needed.  What amazing progress in a short time.
Hey, is there a different list/group re: CNC?
