Had mixed success today.

First off - I like the improvements you've made, Derek - bungees, computer table, etc.  Very pleasant working space!

I ran another power cable for the dust collector.  It's not on the same power strip as the PC, but it is plugged into the same breaker circuit, and they seemed to get along OK.  We can now run it, the motors, and the PC at the same time.  FWIW, I think we'd be fine putting the motors and PC on the same circuit (near the MakerBot), and the dust collector on another (near the panel) .

I see what you and Ron mean about slop in the axes.  Sitting idle, three of the four lower x-axis bearings did not touch the rails.  I fiddled and farted until they all were snug enough that I could not spin the bearings with my fingers.  I do NOT have great anticipation that they will stay snug, so keep an eye on these.  I also found that the x-z-carraige backplate (removable MDF piece) does not sit flush against the carriage.  I initially blamed that for the slop, until I found the bearing issue.  After fixing the bearings, I can't detect that the back plate is a source of flex, but I'm still suspicious.

So I broke out the shiny new 1/8" bits I bought, and quickly discovered we don't have a 1/8" collet!  Dang...I just assumed it would have one.  I am researching them now.  Appears they might be a single-source item: http://www.precisebits.com/products/equipment/bosch_1618_collets_nuts.asp More later...

Not to be deterred, I went ahead and cut some samples with the 1/4" end mill.  Of course the dimensions came out all wrong, but I didn't care.  I wanted to test the g-code I generated in CamBam.  I'm happy to say that it seemed to work pretty well.  I practiced in an old piece of luan (underlayment) I had laying around.  I didn't consider that its slight warpage would be an issue, but it was.  It's also only 0.170" thick, so my 0.250" model didn't pan out too well.  But all in all, the pieces I cut certainly resembled my intention and should work out just fine once we get these issues resolved.  I'll reply with some pix.

Oh, I bought some 1/8" ball end mills (good for 3D reliefs, I'm told) and 1/8" v-point bits (good for engraving and circuit board machining).  But of course I forgot to leave them at the space.

Derek - is the foam on the table intended as a spoil board?  Because I spoiled it a little.  *blush*

Dave,

Sounds like good progress!  Sure the foam there is OK to serve as spoil.  For initial tests I figured it would be even more forgiving than the MDF?
