They are very handy. I have a 1" belt/disk sander, (on clearance at Lowe's for $40 years ago) and recently bought a handheld 3" (4") belt sander. I've been trying to justify a 4" or 6" belt/disk sander...without much luck!
A belt/disk sander at the space would be a handyside kick for the router and MakerBot to cleanup edges and faces. I'd suggest a 1" belt/disk sander from Harbor Frieight for $30-70 : http://www.harborfreight.com/catalogsearch/result?q=belt%20sander
