Yes, this Saturday is Derby Day.  What better day to spend in the shop!

Been putting off my pep-rally email for a few weeks, due to lack of pep.  Pep restored -- here we go!

Let's target this Saturday as a big day on the CNC router.  If we get 2-3 guys to pull wire, solder, and test, I'm sure we can knock out all the wiring in a day.  (Assuming we have all our materials!)

Does anyone know if we need any materials for the wiring?  I don't mind ordering/buying if someone wants me to.  I think we've got gobs of solid CAT5 wire available.  I think we'd be better off with stranded, but I'm not sure it's too critical.  This will only be for the limit switches, as the motors already have premium cables.

If we have another 1-2 guys (or gals!) Saturday, we can simultaneously strip the machine down for paint.  It would be ideal to finish the wiring and THEN strip the machine down for paint, but if we get a good turnout Saturday, this will keep everyone busy and put us a week ahead.

I'll buy paint this week.  Probably just Rustoluem from Home Depot unless someone thinks a more exotic paint is warranted.  This will limit our color choices, but it doesn't seem anyone's too concerned about it.  We'll plan on brushing it on, unless someone claims proficiency with spray.  I have an industrial spray gun (not a nice auto-paint) one, but have never used it.  Somehow, I find it very intimidating.

So, who's in, and when do you want to start?  My friend John Gorman, Sr. is a life-long wiring hack and is eager to come help with the router Saturday.  (or any day, as he put it. danged retired folk...)  I've got permission from swmbo to spend all day there.

ps.  I thought of a great project, once it is running -- post cards, carved into 1/4" hardboard -- address and all!  There's an attention getter in your mailbox!

I'm fairly sure we have both solid-core and stranded CAT5. If not, I can probably snag a few lengths from somewhere. We will need soldering irons and solder, but I think we're good otherwise. I probably have a decent-sized spool that I can bring. :> This sounds like funnnnn.

I have 100' of 22-4 shielded wire. This has a foil shield, and four stranded wires.  I think this is what other builders have recommended.   The shielding will help prevent induced false signals from the A/C or stepper control wires.  The stranded wire will make it more tolerant of thousands of flex cycles.  I have a hunch 100' may not be enough, but should keep us busy.  It is only $0.30/foot at Home Depot.

We don't have David's wiring diagram yet, but even if we don't get it by then, we can do the rough-in wiring and terminate next week...or make our best guesses on the easy stuff, or borrow from some of the wiring diagrams I've posted links to the past few weeks.

I also bought six cans of navy blue spray paint.  Didn't get primer...maybe that was an oversight.  I'll also bring some metal etch to improve adhesion. Is there a garden hose at the space?

We can probably also design and maybe fab the base for the energy chain -- that is, the shelf that the chain rests on when rolled flat.

I'll be there around 10 am...maybe 9, but don't count on it, with the boys and all.

Dustin and James - I think you two live close to each other.  Could be a carpool in the making...

BTW, I am as eager to get this project up and running as anyone.  I'm running out of whole Saturdays I can spend away from my family, and am eager to get back to maximus domesticus.  If it turns out that there is more work ahead of us than I hope, I'd like to find someone among us who will step up and take over some of the leading I've been (happily!) doing the last few months.

Roll call?

Sounds good Dave!  I'll be there at 10am on Saturday to help with whatever I can.   If we need anything that you haven't already taken care of let me know.
