Ballot Summary & Comment Compilation

Streetscape, Route 66 Park, Gateway

Public Meeting

January 22, 2013

28 ballots were cast by participants at the meeting expressing their preference for the “look and feel’” or “personality” of the College Street corridor.  The results are shown below.  The Concept A category was the preference of attendees for both the streetscape/gateway and the park.  The preference is for simplicity and authenticity.

Comments for Concepts:

·       Like bridge better in Concept A

·       Like gas pump clock from Concept B better at corner

·       Water feature is great!

·       Not crazy about three logs leaned together

·       I don’t like adding the West Central District

·       Streetscape/Gateway-Prefer Concept A with metal, neon lights & flags from Concept B

·       I like the street and park on Concept A, but like the neon park sign from Concept B

·       I would like to see the original Route 66 logo used on the street in Concept A versus the stylized version shown

·       Tie in elements of Concept A & B for both topics.

·       More to “original” ideas, the 1920 -1960 era

·       I like Concept B because of the gas pumps

·       Concept A seems to get the traffic into the park better

·       Please include a water feature in the park no matter what concept is chosen

·       Prefer Concept A but like Hamburg sign on Concept C

·       Replace street sign markers with old concrete pillars historically used in Springfield

·       Like the gas pumps

·       Prefer Concept A for park but use the Concept B sign

·       Like the clock & the bridge on Concept B of Streetscape, not so wild about the gas pumps for the entry

·       Love the idea of the rock cabins for Concept A.  Need glass blocks too

·       I do not like Concept C of park so much, like cars & Cadillac logos

·       Concept A had the best gateways

·       Love the gateways and clock on West Concept B

·       Don’t like Concept C gateway

·       Like Concept C water

·       Like the traffic flow and motel in Concept A

·       Bridge A is great

·       Like contemporary stair concept in Concept C

·       Simplicity of Concept B bridge will be tough to execute with pedestrian safety

·       Keep art in JV park @ east end

·       Motor court icon with concept C organizational elements

·       Prefer destination

·       Keep Route 66 on street at intersections-photo opportunities

·       Like brick bridge

Comments for Kitsch:

·       Like Solo cup

·       Like car fountain

·       Like Campbell 66 camel

·       Like wishing tree

·       No to dice and stork

·       Use “Yellow Bonnet Girl”

·       Don’t like Solo cup, it’s like a box of Kraft Mac ‘n Cheese.  What does that have to do with the road?

·       Like car theme in park

·       66 Hooters

·       I don’t think we want to see the car wrecked.  Maybe the radiator spouts at intervals like Old Faithfull

·       Monument to Ozark Jubilee that shows video or plays recordings from original shows

·       I like the idea of a very large Route 66 logo rising out of the ground to signify the birthplace

·       Tribute to entrepreneurial spirit

·       Designate as “Birthplace of Route 66”

·       Stay with 30’s & 40’s

·       Have a spring

·       Have a large stainless steel 1955 Chevy Nomad wagon life-size but art showing a family vacation in the wagon

·       Route 66 has to do with transportation, history, and fun

·       Possibly correlate the gateways with cities, e.g. “LA gateway” “Chicago gateway” “Springfield gateway” at Broadway

·       Sky Ranch sign

·       Old stone work

·       Spring feature

·       Stuckey’s

·       Plaque of John T. Woodruff, founder of Route 66 in park

·       Fountain with Solo Cup

·       Pay homage to Hickok – Tutt gunfight and Bonnie & Clyde

·       Need to add Yellow Bonnet, bread company and Mexican Villa

·       Need squished penny machine in park

·       Need car planter, not fountain

·       Hold off on this and call for public input, call for artists from real artists

·       Use the real image of Campbell 66

·       Like what wishing tree does, not how it looks

·       Use Yellow Bonnet

·       Need “Birthplace of 66” signage/gateways

·       Transition from 20’s to 50’s between square and west end

·       Joplin has car fountain on S. Hearns already

·       Use rock art

Meeting Verbal Comments:

·       Consider this is Byway for signage, etc.

·       Need to be authentic.  Items represented should be ones that exist or formerly existed in Springfield

·       Like Solo (Lilly Tulip) cup

·       No stork

·       Park should be shady and natural

·       Concepts are too busy

·       Use local materials

·       Red’s is a hit and is recognizable

·       Kitsch:

o   Should be recognizable

o   Not foot-stairs

o   Public art should be established later by artists

o   Like water

·       Have elements for kids

·       Capitalize on “Birthplace of Route 66”

·       Transition eras from end to end

·       Recognize bread making tradition

·       Recognize Springfield Grocer Yellow Bonnet Girl
