I was not able to attend the last meeting because I was out of town – I also may not be able to attend the next one. As a property owner, I thought I’d just email my comments, if that’s OK.  Let

I’m not sure what the exact question was – was it ‘what character do you want the neighborhood to take on’ or ‘what character do want the streetscape and park to take on’?  The visual images were mostly of streetscape, and as I understand that’s the City’s role here is in the in the park and infrastructure.  I think the design team and city planners need to be very cautious to distinguish what they are working toward.  The city ought to stay focused on infrastructure, and maintenance thereof, in a way that supports and enhances the opportunity for private development.

‘Traditional Americana’ as a theme seems like the overwhelming vote.  But interestingly all the of public meetings we had prior to this, it was discussed, and the vision sets out a theme of ‘individuality’ and ‘quirky’ – much like Galloway has started to become – with a planned component of live/work zoning, unique to the city.

I do believe celebration of Route 66 and the related attractions is also a key element to this corridor but should not  should not define the overall vision.  This area has high potential to serve the West Central neighborhood, and in my humble opinion should not be designed to be a ‘tourist destination’.  Not to say tourists should not come through and enjoy the neighborhood – they should be encouraged to do so - what I am saying creates a distinct difference in the outcome.

We should plan for this district to grow and serve downtown and the west central neighborhood, which in turn will be a unique experience for passers through.  We should not plan for this to be a tourist attraction.

And I especially am cautious in proposing that city take on the role of developing some sort of large physical iconic element.  I’d encourage keeping focused on streetscape elements – with potential partnership / participation in encouraging private development to create the destination attraction(s).

Maybe one idea would be for the city (along with CVB and participation from related businesses) to invest in developing an app that would guide visitors along the route 66 segment through Springfield – possibly highlighting other things to do while in town as well.
