The City of Springfield has initiated a planning process to help improve walking, bicycling, and other person-powered transportation.
This plan is being developed in response to goals set out by the Springfield Strategic Plan, as well as increasing desire within the community for more emphasis on pedestrian and bicycle use.
The City will build on current bicycle and Greenways plans, and miscellaneous pedestrian policies during this planning process that will lead to a plan and policy for a complete transportation network for person-powered transportation including off-street paths, on-street pedestrian facilities, and on-street bicycle facilities that would improve the overall safety and access of citizens relying on person-powered transportation.
The bicycle – pedestrian committee of the Springfield Traffic Advisory Board is taking the lead on this planning process, and members are seeking more public input.
An open house public meeting will take place 4:30 – 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 28 in the first floor conference room at the Busch Municipal Building, 840 Boonville Ave.
The open house will include four stations and four comment sheets including:
On-street pedestrian system including sidewalks and other public walkways and signals, signs, and markings for traffic guidance and control
On-street bicycle system including streets marked a bike routes, striped with bike lanes, wide paths beside the street, and other on-street facilities for bicycle travel
Off-street path system including greenway and rail corridor paths for pedestrians and bicyclists.
Person-powered transportation system including the relationship among the three individual systems and concepts such as "The Link" that combine aspects of each into one comprehensive network.
