Hello,

My name is Cecilia and I work as an applied anthropologist.
For years I have been experimenting with alternative ways of returning my research.
Lately I have discovered the branch of visual and multimodal anthropology and have become very passionate about it. I am therefore looking for a  a summer/winter school or immersive workshops to be able to delve into these aspects in a practical way. Can you recommend me any school, gatherings or sort of?

thank you very much,

all the best,

Cecilia Iaconelli

Dear Cecilia (and other group members),

To start with, you may consider the Multimodal Research and Publishing workshop that we are organising in Berlin in June. You will find more info in the attachment and below:

Multimodal Research and Publishing Workshop

Berlin, DeZIM & ZOiS, 19-20 June 2023

Multimodal research and multimodal publishing have been gaining traction in recent years. New, often collaborative, research projects are taking place while more and more publishers allow for elements ‘beyond text’ in publications. Still, outputs created in non-textual modalities are often seen as ‘knowledge transfer’ more than proper research, rarely recognised on par with traditional academic books or journal articles, and are typically hard to cite in a coherent and trackable way.

We are organising a two-day workshop to discuss the opportunities and challenges of multimodal research and publishing. We invite those who already practice multimodality in their research to share experiences and learn from each other. While we, the organisers, focus mostly on the use of multimodality to research migration, transborder work, activism and challenges pertinent to Central- and South-Eastern Europe, we also invite researchers who focus on other issues and other parts of the world.

The core workshop will take place on 20 June. On 19 June, we are organising training sessions for early career researchers taking their first steps in multimodal research and publishing. The organisers – VISION Project based at the German Centre for Integration and Migration Research (DeZIM), and the Centre for East European and International Studies (ZOiS), both in Berlin, will be able to provide support for travel and accommodation for some of the guests who require such support.

If you are interested in participating, please send us the following information to multimoda...@dezim-institut.de by 25 May:

-       200-300 word abstract

-       150-word bio

-       information on any special equipment or setup that you may need

-       whether you would be coming only for the 20th or would also like to participate in training on the 19th of June

-       whether you need support for your travel and/or accommodation costs (and if so, for which nights and for what train/flight connection).

Dear Cecilia,

Last fall my colleague Adolfo Estalella and I taught the course 'Devicing Ethnography' in Oslo, you could check the syllabus here: https://www.uio.no/studier/emner/sv/tik/TIK9014/index-eng.html#course-content

The course was conceived as crash course into anthropological invention and the creation of field devices. This is an argument we expand in a recently co-edited volume, titled "An Ethnographic Inventory" https://www.routledge.com/An-Ethnographic-Inventory-Field-Devices-for-Anthropological-Inquiry/Criado-Estalella/p/book/9781032124391, which might be conceived as an alternative to ethnographic handbooks or manuals. This impulse is also connected to the xcol open-source platform: https://xcol.org/ - a free/libre repository of ethnographic invention, understood as a learning resource, which accepts further contributions, and will start being further developed after the summer.

Searching to open up the book to a non-English-speaking audience, from March 2 to April 27, 2023 we have been hosting a weekly open/free seminar series with our Spanish-speaking contributors: https://xcol.org/xposition/seminarios-invencion-etnografica/ (all sessions were recorded and uploaded to our youtube channel). But we're also planning to host a series of events in English for next fall.

Hope this might be of any interest.

All the best,
T

Hi Cecilia and all,

We have an online workshop coming up on embodiment as a process in documentary filmmaking on 17 May. We plan to host some more practical film production seminars later this summer as well.

Best,
Erica

---------

BODY NARRATIVES: An Online Film Workshop - 17 May

As filmmakers, artists, and researchers, stories become our vehicles for sharing unique perspectives on the world. Yet, our bodies often hold different narratives from what we typically see in film - nonlinear, sensorial, and deeply felt, these stories can be just as compelling. But how can we access them?

If you are looking to learn more about embodied filmmaking, revitalise a current film project, or simply want to challenge yourself by going more in depth on experimental ways to work with moving image, join us for a two hour online workshop on "Body Narratives", and dive deep into the process of embodied documentary, or, how our bodies can play a crucial role in developing audiovisual work.

During the workshop, we will explore theories of the body's role in filmmaking, as well as:
  • IMPRINT'S research and practice with 'embodied documentary' filmmaking
  • Various embodied filmmaking techniques and their filmic results
  • How to restructure stories to fit bodily experiences outside of the standard narrative structures used in film
  • The role of relationships and reflection in filmmaking as a means of connecting to one's own body
  • A sensorially informed 'storyboard' from the depth of our own bodies' knowledge
This two hour workshop will be offered two separate times, both online, on 7 April and 17 May. Tickets for either date are available on a sliding scale basis at the link below:

This workshop is suitable for documentary and fiction filmmakers, researchers interested in using visual methods, artists from any field working with or interested in moving image, and anyone working with themes of embodiment and/or the body who want to learn more about filmmaking.

ABOUT IMPRINT

IMPRINT Documentary Collective is a feminist film collective focusing on embodiment and the body in documentary film. Founded by Erica Monde and Marta Massa in 2021, IMPRINT delivers workshops, residencies, productions, consultancies and popup screenings to experiment with the theme of embodiment as a process for making films. Our collaborations within the film industry and community initiatives have allowed us to reach a wide audience on the potential of embodied filmmaking, and our goal is to broaden the potential for representation of marginalised storytellers, using storytelling and the documentary medium as an act of radical and empathic resistance through the lens of the body politic. We are currently based between Scotland and Sardinia.
