The Responsible AI in Libraries and Archives team is delighted to announce Viewfinder: A toolkit for values-driven AI in libraries and archives.

Viewfinder is a participatory toolkit designed to facilitate ethical reflection about AI in libraries and archives from different stakeholder perspectives.

Viewfinder was developed by librarians and technology ethicists at Montana State University, University of Montana, James Madison University, and Iowa State University, based on research conducted between 2022 and 2025. Our work was made possible in part by funding from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

The toolkit is available in two formats:

Print-at-home PDF: https://osf.io/yue9s
Interactive website: https://www.lib.montana.edu/responsible-ai/viewfinder/

A preprint of a submitted paper introducing Viewfinder is available via OSF: https://osf.io/zpqs9

We hope that practitioners will use Viewfinder to reflect upon complex AI issues and build a more responsible, people-centered AI landscape in libraries and archives.

Thank you Sara.
