Hi everyone,

We are reviewing our process for responding to requests to add a new print periodical subscription. Here’s our process. Requesters complete a form. Then the form and a sample copy are routed to all nine reference librarians, who add their comments and a subscribe/don’t subscribe vote. When all the reference librarians have reviewed the request, it goes to our library director for a final decision. The director makes a decision and the request is referred to our systems librarian, who notifies the requester and initiates a subscription, if that was the decision. This process can take some time to complete.

Do any of you have a more streamlined process you’d share? Thanks in advance for your time!

Hi Debby,

Our periodicals librarian (who is also the assistant director) makes all these decisions, with input from the liaison librarian for the department in question when the request comes from a faculty member. But our enrollment is a wee bit smaller than yours (~4300) so I doubt we get nearly the quantity of requests that y'all do.

WE have decided to have a static budget for periodicals. Most of our
titles are assigned to an academic dept. If the dept requests a new
journal, they must cancel a title of equal value. If it is an absolutely
essential title that they want us to cancel, we may transfer it to the
Library list. The liaison librarian for that dept is responsible for
determining if the requested title is indexed and not duplicated in one of
our electronic packages.
