collectd and instance names

Hello
Newbie  to collectd - I'm trialing it in an ELK/Graphana environment and its working very well
I do have one issue I need to resolve
The network team want to know if the instance name returned to the system can be a combination of the ifDescr and the ifAlias?

Or failing that if its possible to amend the polling system to poll the ifDescr to include it as returned value against each instance

I tried to see if I can use the polled values defined in the
<Data....>
to poll a string but seem to be stymied by the types.db which appears to only allow derive, gauge, absolute or counter so text not allowed there
