API Key is invalid / 401 Not Authorized

Some time ago if you provided an invalid API key, you would get a
response like:
"<error><not_valid>API Key is invalid.</not_valid></error>"

It now appears that a 401 Not Authorized is returned.

The API docs still indicate the former...
