Well first I thought out meetup was at 7:00, I actually made it to the
street outside the place at 7:00 but there was absolutely no parking
available, unless I wanted to hike 5 blocks thru the thru the rain, finally
found something 2 blocks away, hiked in the rain to the bakery (now 7:40),
asked several tables with two or more people sitting there if they were a
meetup group, found only a home owners association group, but decided there
group was not what I was looking for and headed back to Oakland.

Hey Warren,

I was there till about 7:40 pm.   I was behind the home owners association, with my IPAD set up.

I tried to send you my number through meetup so that you could call me.

Thanks for coming though.

Willing to try again, in two weeks?

Mike,

OK, I did look in the area back of the homeowners group, perhaps if you were by yourself, that may explain why I didn’t ask anyone in that area, seems to me there were three people there when I looked, I didn’t talk to anyone in that area.  Let’s try it again, and plan how we will recognize each other, not sure what to do about parking, but we should plan that too, since it’s such a long way from bart.

My apologies, you had sent your card below, I just did not print it out or bring it with me, putting it in my cell before I forget.

I showed up around 7:05, saw only the large group, wandered around a bit, and then left.

I organized a meet up once, not sure any of this will help, but use or discard what you wish.

  • I picked a place to meet that at the time of the typical meet-up (6:00 – 7:00 pm weeknights) had plenty of nearby street parking (for those who needed to drive) and only a couple of blocks from BART for those who needed to use public transportation.
  • I picked a place that served food and drinks for everyone to choose what they liked, with large tables that could accommodate a group of a half dozen or more at a single table, such a place would have experience serving large groups and would not find the accompanying noise unusual or annoying.
  • I avoided changing the date/time to accommodate everyone’s schedule, and recommended a second meeting date/time for those that could not make the first.
  • I made a three fold csrd with the name of the meetup group printed on the top two sides large enough to read across the room and placed it on the table.
  • When I arrived I talked to the waitress, that I was expecting a large group, and explained that there would be a lot of talking and if she could take good care of us, I would expect our group would tend to outdo each other with their appreciation.  I explained it was the kind of people they were, and made sure the tip was that way.
  • I also made up flyers for the next meet up for everyone to take with them.
  • I solicited suggestions for speakers, tours, and other ideas to improve the meet ups.  And created online discussion threads on each one.

The meet up group was consolidated with a San Francisco group on the same topic, when I found myself having to travel on business.

Just a few ideas to consider,

I got involved watching a sentimental program on PBS about the Weavers, Pete Seeger, Peter Yarough, etc, with my wife and suddenly realized about 9:00 that it was actually Thursday (for some reason I thought today was Wednesday, lost a day in there somewhere).  I’m willing to try again, if you are still up for it.
