I want this functionality - - except that my primary will be a node in mongodb atlas on awas and some of my secondaries will also be in atlas aws, but I will also have some secondaries on premise running in a kubernetes cluster.
Basically I want one read/write mongodb master and many read-only secondaries, some secondaries in public cloud and some secondaries on premise. So I am looking for using mongodb for that - if mongodb cant do that, can you please recommend some other database that might be able to do it ? I would prefer a nosql db, but if nothing can do it then a sql db is also fine.
You can't currently have an Atlas cluster with a node outside of Atlas however it should be possible to maintain a mirror of your main cluster using a ChangeStream to mirror all writes to one or more on premise nodes.
Per my understanding, you could use Azure Cosmos DB Data Migration Tool to Export docs from collections to JSON file, then pick up the exported file(s) and insert / update into your on-premise MongoDB. You can easily make multi-tenant real-time systems using it and which gives you an GraphQL api guaranteed to be in sync with your database for free. Also, the transactional support in postgres shines in comparison to mongodb.

I have three 3 node cluster on-premises ( 1 Primary and 2 Secondary ). I have same 3 node cluster in AZURE ( 1 Primary and 2 Secondary ) with same version and data but with different FQDN in azure. How shall I connect mongodb replica set in azure to mongodb replica set in on-premises so that they can start replicating the data. Later I would like to switch off on-premises mongodb and move finally to azure. My question is:
Basically, you add those three nodes as secondary to your current on-premise replica set. (rs.add(FQDN))Not necessary to be hidden, but set priority lower than nodes at the premises, to prevent primary to moving there before you want to do so.
When you want to move primary there, modify rs.conf() so that (one of) Azure nodes have the highest priority, and two azure nodes have the second highest priority. Then "remove" those on-premise nodes from the setup. (rs.remove(FQDN))
