Dear CoLang-ers,

Greetings from Carly Tex, Sumshot Khular, and Susan Gehr, the membership committee for the CoLang Advisory Circle. You are receiving this email if you have participated in a past CoLang as either a student or instructor.

On behalf of the Advisory Circle, we are formally soliciting nominations for 4 Advisory Circle positions. There are 2 student positions, 1 community language scholar position, 1 web representative, who will lead the web committee. You may nominate yourself.

We encourage community language scholars and people from outside of the US to apply for the open positions on the Circle, but nominations are not limited to these groups. If you have a serious interest in hosting a CoLang Institute in the future, you should nominate yourself or ask to be nominated.

It is likely that some individuals will fill multiple categories.

  • Deadline for nomination is has been extended until October 21, 2022

  • Please use this online form to submit nominations: https://forms.gle/ctufk7qprqx9T67YA

  • Nominations should include a brief statement about the nominee’s commitment to the CoLang Charter Principles, participation in past CoLang Institutes, affiliation, community, and willingness to be nominated.

  • Contact Carly Tex ca...@aicls.org  or Susan Gehr susa...@gmail.com with any questions

  • Self-nominations are welcome, as are nominations of past Advisory Circle members who are interested in serving on the Advisory Circle again.

Advisory Circle Duties:

"The Advisory Circle ensures continuity of practice for the Institute, while at the same time recognizing the need for change. It provides stewardship of the Institute, ensures appropriate venues for future years, seeks long- term funding, and develops outreach, public awareness, and media attention. It provides guidance to the Local Organizing Committee on the structure of the Institute, special initiatives, choice of courses to be offered and instructors, and possible funding sources." (from the CoLang Charter)

These duties are mainly accomplished by email discussions. AC members must be able to receive and respond to email concerning CoLang governance and growth in a timely manner. Some questions come up very quickly. These usually do not take more than several rounds of email to resolve, but active participation in these discussions and decisions is a must.

Advisory Circle Members:

"…should be people who

(1) have participated in at least one Institute,

(2) have demonstrated commitment to the ideals of the institute (inclusivity, collaboration, and the desire to work with others to help preserve the world’s linguistic diversity),

(3) are willing to work as productive members of the Advisory Circle.

It is the Advisory Circle’s responsibility to ensure that invitations are extended in such a way to ensure a diversity of representatives (community linguists, academic linguists, students, and at least some range of geographic breadth)." (from the CoLang Charter)

Here are the remaining Advisory Circle members and the categories they fulfill:

Sumshot Khular (International)
