I am just curious is a real time clock really needed. If the device has an NTP
connection set to sync every 5 min wouldn't that be enough in terms of an
alternative?

I really don't know... Probably the database might need this, or maybe Qt or the X server.

I wonder why you are worrying about these low-level things, even if you went for a Raspberry Pi, there's and RTC... Unless you plan on using an Arduino or build your own hardware :) In that case good luck!

Jad i am not going for a DE environment at all. I am planning on embedding coinbox and on power on it loads directly the  coinbox pos software. Reason I am asking is that my cubieboard does not have an RTC and I was told by Ben i believe, correct me if I am wrong, that i need one.

You need system clock to boot your operating system.

NTP server can only be accessed when your operating system has already started its network services which only happens after it fully booted up.  Therefore, you cannot start your embedded system without internal clock.

Even if you're not going for a desktop environment, you need at least Qt and an X server to run coinbox on. It's not web based.

Even if it were web based, you'd need an X server and a web browser.

But I guess that if such applications would work without a real time clock, I don't see why coinbox wouldn't... I don't know about the Cubie board or similar systems enough to give you a sure answer, so don't take my word for it.

Wilson i am referring to a real time clock here not system clock.

X you would need a very minimalistic install im sure.

"If a system has a real-time clock (RTC) this is often used only to initialize the system time when the system boots. From then, the system time is running independently. The RTC will probably only be used again at shutdown to save the current system time. Such a configuration is used in many workstation configurations. It is useful if time is not really critical, or if the system time is synchronized against some external reference clock like when using the Network Time Protocol (NTP) to access time servers on the network."
