Hello there,
I'm reaching out to multiple groups emails here as this is important. Today one of the groups received a phishing scam and I'm including information on it below including the response I got from Society on this. If something like this happens to you please
let me know so I can report it.
Please do not open anything that is suspicious in nature.
This is a description of what happened and why I'm sending everyone a heads up. Scammers are getting very good if they can pick apart SCA lingo.
" I just experienced a phishing scam from the following email
flip...@virginmedia.com. The person's was claiming to be our senschal asking me to PayPal 1750 for a grant. The exchequer will reimburse me by Thursday. I varefied that Lady
Genevieve Perrin did not send the email and is not hers. The scammer addressed me by my title as well. If I learn more i will forward. I wished to keep the kingdom in the loop."
This is what I got from the SCA IT Department.
Hello,
Sadly, phishing attempts are just a reality of the current age. There is nothing we can do on this end, unless it's coming from an
sca.org email address. Here are some things that can help:
-
Report the Phishing attempt to your email provider. This helps train their detection algorthyms to do a better job detecting and blocking malicious emails.
-
Do not respond or reply to any phishing email. While some people enjoy trolling phishers, it is harmful in multiple ways. First, you have verified for them that the email address is valid. Second, it tells those algorthyms mentioned
in step 1 that this email is okay, thereby lessening it's accuracy.
-
Delete the email. If you clicked on any link in the email, run a full anti-virus and mal ware sweep on your machine immediately.
Thank you for letting us know,
Morgaine
