The necessary downside is to play a given track, both players need to have it in their library, and sometimes metatags won't match up. So, if you're playing with a stranger, most often you'll be using songs from the default soundtrack. Thankfully it's a solid and varied list well-suited to the gameplay, but is naturally always less fun than using your own stuff. It's always exciting in the occasion you do find someone with a lot of the same tunes, though, and could prove a great way to make some gaming friends. That said, an option to search by people with a minimum number of shared songs would be a big improvement.

You start out by choosing a song out of your library. In Android's case, it will automatically scan folders in in local storage and pick out music files that are compatible with the game. It will then add that song to your library, and you can generate a level around it. The general tempo of the song, as well as its bass, determine a number of things: the placement and amount of enemies, the power of your ship's shots, and the colors you experience when you fire will all depend on your choice of track.

When it comes to visuals, Beat Hazard is not lacking at all; the game can be absolutely beautiful, and gives you the option of reducing the amount of visuals in case it becomes too much. Beams pulse with every beat of the music as you fly around with one of two controls schemes: you can opt for a single-joystick control where you're automatically pointed at the enemies you want to shoot, or you use two joysticks to assume a more familiar move-and-shoot scheme.

Each level has a number of different enemies and bosses, and a number of power-ups to choose from. Some will increase the amount of damage you do, while others will rack up extra cash and score multipliers. The game provides you with a number of perks available for purchase, giving you passive bonuses that will change the way your game is played. For instance, I was a fan of giving myself some extra power-ups at the start because it tended to make the game a bit more visually appealing.

Everything you see in the game is dictated by the music in some way, from the firepower of your ship to the number and patterns of enemies coming at you. Each track produces a unique (but, most importantly, repeatable) level.

Very interesting breakdown, thank you very much for doing this. It's good to see what each platform offers.

I do think (and maybe this my own bias) that the PSN is getting the short end of the stick as it came out much later. All things being equal I, for instance, would have preferred to play this on the PS3. But I had already bought it on steam so when the ps3 version hit (even with new content) I didn't bother. There is a lot of crossover between the three platforms (leaving iOS out of it as that's its own beast). Most folks own both consoles and a pc. So the last one out of the gate is going to take a hit.

That said, I'd love to have this game on my vita, but im guessing after those ps3 numbers you aren't really thinking about it... ;)

Awwww man...That PSN comment just crushed my dreams. :(

I bought Beat Hazard Ultra in 2011 on PSN immediately after trying the demo, and to be honest had never really heard about it before then. It quickly became one of my favourite games of all time. It's an amazing game, a transcending experience, and I've logged more time on it than most games I've ever played (second only to Demon's Souls for current gen games).

I certainly understand that I'm in the minority in terms of the numbers, many people prefer other consoles or PC and that's definitely okay. I'm sad to hear that PSN didn't meet expectations though. I don't own any other console, don't play games on my phone, and am not a big PC gamer. With that being said, if you don't plan on releasing a sequel/new version on PSN, then whatever platform you do go with will get my attention.

So beyond the success of Beat Hazard's sales, know that going forward, you'll be helping the sales of the platforms themselves. Best wishes in all future endeavours, I'm very much looking forward to whatever you do next.

Thank you so much for sharing this. I am in the process of developing an iOS app and your graphs and comments have been very informative. In doing research on the iOS market these kinds of numbers and info are hard to come by. I appreciate your openness and I think devs could benefit one another from this type of sharing. Thanks again!

Beat Hazard is a twin stick shooter in the vein of geometry wars which uses the players own music library to generate unique levels. With tthis guide I'll try to outline general tips and tricks to help you handle the insane, seizure inducing beat hazard.

The game has a leveling system which is tied to the number of points which you have earned from songs, this is important because as you level up you gain bonuses. These can be range from marginally helpful (volume powerups from the outset of a level) to almost essential for more difficult songs (extra lives). Use this sytem to your advantage early on, if your struggling use easy mode to ensure a higher score and replay songs you can get consistently good scores on.

Bearing in mind the previous point many songs have around 5/10 seconds of quiet down time at the very end, this often cripples your weapons and leaves you suddenly vulnerable so don't get caught off guard.

POW labelled powerups have an even more direct impact on your weapons, adding direct streams which remain even during quieter sequences.

Filling both the VOL and POW bars activates beat hazard mode, giving you devastating spread and damage, this is key when fighting bosses and large groups of enemies, try and go on the offensive and fill these bars quickly, beat mania mode can keep you alive during tough encounters.

I am loving the destruction in this game, so insane. Controls are much better than any other dual-stick shooter games. Played survival mode and boss fight. Bosses are difficult to beat but they are fun. Must buy for an Android user

A little difficult to get the controls right when I started but once I felt comfortable it was a lovely game to play. The graphics in time with the electronic beat were gorgeous and I have to admit I died more than once because I was concentrating on the array of lights in front of me instead of the actual gameplay.

You are in control of a tiny spaceship and with enemy ships shooting projectiles at you from every angle, you have to be very agile not to get shot down after 15-20 seconds as I did. As far as I understood this is a high-score chasing game and you have to pick up score multipliers dropped by foes if you want to rack up some decent numbers. The soundtrack is very explosive and fits the genre of the game perfectly. I am afraid this game is meant specifically for the fans of hardcore action games, so count this as a hazard warning.

Graphics: Visually, the game looks great. The animations are clean and don't require a high framerates. The battles are colourful and fun to look at. However, the number of things on the screen can be overwhelming, and the flashing lights could trigger a seizure. But, I guess these are just normal features of bullet hell games.
