Looking for some help on this one. I received a list of extensions to block from my Security team. That is all fine and dandy since I can add them to the "ExtensionInstallBlacklist", which, will prevent users from installing them. However, in testing this, I found that if it's already installed before I send out the config profile it doesn't do anything with that extension.
I tested this by installing Adblock Plus (cfhdojbkjhnklbpkdaibdccddilifddb) on a Mac. I then deployed out the config profile and found Adblock Plus was still there and functioned correctly. I even closed and reopened Chrome. If I remove Adblock Plus manually, then, try to reinstall it, then, then it is blocked from reinstalling with the profile in place still.
Has anyone found a way to disable and/or remove already installed Chrome extensions via configuration profile? I even tried the "BlockExternalExtensions" setting but that did nothing. Thank you in advance!
@jorge.blandon Yes, I ended up getting this working. What did I do differently, nothing. I struggled for a bit adding it to the ExtensionInstallBlacklist and removing it. Then, readd and remove again. For whatever reason I couldn't figure out why it isn't work. I searched the web and found a document somewhere that said to disable previously installed extensions to add it to the ExtensionInstallBlacklist.
So, round 20 something I tried it again, and, it worked! Looking back on it I think the reason why it didn't work is because I had 2 or 3 other configuration policies all trying to adjust something in Chrome. So, I ended up combining them all into one. In my testing, I had AdBlock Plus installed, with no Chrome config profiles applied to the Mac. I then added AdBlock Plus to the ExtensionInstallBlacklist and deployed the config profile to the test Mac. I had Chrome open at the time and found the extension disappear from the toolbar. When I went into Extensions I saw it listed there, but, it wasn't enabled. I was able to click the button to enable it, but, when I went back out it wasn't enabled. Basically, you can flip the toggle for the extension, but, it doesn't do anything. Rebooted the Mac, closed reopened Chrome and everything was still legit.

Just need your help please. We have a few users who has downloaded the Youtube App from Chrome. It can be downloaded by going to Youtube.com using chrome and clicking on this icon located on the top right corner.
To uninstall the YouTube app installed via Chrome as a Progressive Web App (PWA), you need to use a combination of Group Policy Object (GPO) settings and PowerShell scripts to remove the app without prompting the user. Since the typical uninstall method you're using prompts the user, consider alternative approaches.
To uninstall the YouTube PWA without user interaction, you can write a PowerShell script and deploy it via SCCM (System Center Configuration Manager). Use PowerShell to remove the application and ensure that user prompts are suppressed.
Thanks for your post. From your description, I understand that you would like to forbidden user to download apps from Chrome. Please understand that Chrome is a third-party software, you can contact the Chrome support for any related issue.
Unless the interface advises that the "promise" of Screen Time may not work with certain applications i.e., any "blocked" website (discord, reddit, youtube... pornhub!) will function just fine on ANYTHING other than the Safari browser then... It's Apple's responsibility to either correct the issue, or make it known its functionality doesn't deliver on its promise, and the comfort a false belief in that promise may provide.
Agreed that this is a bug. Same experience as other posters. Using the latest iOS version, 14.2 (18B92). Chrome is also updated to latest (87.0.4280.77). app limits is enabled in settings. Downtime does not affect chrome or safari and the default behavior is to always allow if apps are not in the list.
Parents CAN'T limit apps in their entirety, you must set a 1-minute limit. So, the moment any of my kids access an Apple device, they get a slew of messages their app limits will expire in 1 minute. Even I have to admit to them, "Yeah, it's dumb."
And then there's the 11:59 PM setting if you want to block out an entire day, for example, if you want to limit apps to weekend use only, all the weekdays have to be set start at 11:59 PM (and end at midnight); I suppose that's a feature not a bug.
Chrome is impervious to Apple Screen Time. My kids "need" it for pandemic distance learning-- The school district says so, and it's their gateway to the internet. Screen Time limits aren't working. Screen Time fails to live up to its promise and I wish Apple would return the ability to limit user time on a specific device... Like what used to work great on "Mojave."
Below are my daughter's Screen Time readouts... Clearly, the 2-Hr Limit on Google Chrome isn't working... Which means any other website I've set a limit on (Tiki's Tok, Instagram, Discord) are also not working, because Screen time can't block Chrome.
Typing in 100+ "allowed" websites into a list, as opposed to typing in the one you want restricted is NOT "working." It's like saying as long as you're pointed down hill your car will always move on its own.
Downtime is a feature of Screen Time that simply sets time windows for use. Previously, with "Parental Controls" (pre-Catalina MacOS), you could block a particular website from being reached. The same functionality exists in Screen time, and it will work when using Safari. It does NOT work when using Google Chrome. Try it with Discord.com, Instagram.com, or Pornhub.com. Tell Screen Time to block them, and then get unfettered access with Google Chrome.
Ive already tried that, App Store has been blocked the whole time. As I mentioned before, because Chrome has already been authorised, one does not need to go through App Store again to download Chrome. If you simply 'search' for Chrome on your Apple mobile like you're looking for any of your other apps it recognises that you once had Chrome and allows user to download it again but this time without the need for any permissions...its very strange.
I set an hour, he can have more time if I enter the screen time passcode. I suppose you could do this and then keep giving them more time as and when. I found this to be the only way to stop my son spending hours on chrome after his downtime started as screentime locked the other apps on his phone but not this one. He was still going on Instagram but through chrome.
Also, do you think that this type of bug is just a completely unintended consequence of the iOS 14 update? Or is it Google wanting to make people use their management app to manage screen time (though it only will manage android devices currently) or is it Apple trying to get people to dedicate their web browser use to solely Safari (which would be fine...but Google Chrome does usually work for sites that Safari does not, in my experience).
I have too discovered this issue and am mega p**sed off. There I am thinking I have the right controls set on my 12 years old iPhone only to find that he can, not only have unlimited access to Chrome but also when I remove the **** app, he can freely download it without Apple Screentime sending me an 'permission request'. There is a serious issue here.
