As we gear up for an enriching conference experience, we invite you to play a more involved role. We're seeking volunteers for key positions to help ensure the event runs smoothly. This is a fantastic opportunity to engage more deeply with the content and speakers. Detailed instructions for volunteers will be provided closer to the conference date.
Formely known as the Animism Reading Group, the Interspecies Dialogues Conversation Group is a discussion group centered on interspecies intersubjectivity, posthuman ethics, relational ontologies, kinship-based science, and the implications of these topics on politics, ethics, culture, and religious experience. While the primary intent of the group is academic, the group also provides validation and community for those whose spiritual beliefs include an animist cosmology. Several CSWR speakers have been invited in connection with the animism group, including David Abram, Robin Wall Kimmerer, and Graham Harvey. The group was initiated by Mary Balkon, MDiv '20, under a CSWR research fellowship, and it is currently facilitated by Ph.D. Candidate Natalia Schwien.
This is a free bilingual symposium where participants will hear from featured speakers Bing Yang, Shengnan Zhang, Xin Dang, Yun Hsiao, Xianting Huang, Qi Liu, Kai Wei, and Shu-Miaw Chaw. Following the talks, join a discussion of the challenges and opportunities of doing evolutionary biology research in East and Southeast Asia.
Participants can gain insights on publishing in Evolution during a panel with Associate Editors Jen-Pan Huang and Suhua Shi, and the Evolution English Language Support Program editor Sishuo Wang on November 13 at 10:00 China Standard Time (UTC+08:00).
This symposium and panel are part of the SSE International Symposia Series.
More information about the symposium speakers, schedule, and panel is available on the SSE website.
SSE is pleased to announce the call for speakers for the International Symposium for Mandarin Speakers from East and Southeast Asia on November 11, 2023. SSE invites Mandarin-speaking evolutionary biologists of all career stages from East and Southeast Asia to apply to share their research in this free, virtual event.
Instructions for how to apply can be found here.
Deadline to apply: September 29, 2023
Deadline: June 30, 2023
The speakers will be selected covering several axes of diversity to guarantee a fair representation of the regional community in terms of gender, geographic location, subdisciplines, and study systems. We will inform the results of this call in the first week of July. If you have any questions, please contact us at GS...@evolutionsociety.org.
This event is organized by the SSE Graduate Student Advisory Committee (GSAC) in collaboration with the Indian Society of Evolutionary Biologists, with support from the SSE Council and the SSE International Committee.
As evolutionary biologists, we engage in research and scholarship to better understand the world around us, whether it be the origin of life, its relatedness, or responses to environmental change. And through our mentoring and education we seek to equip our students with the tools they need to also examine the world through the lens of evolution and change. This commitment to understanding change in the world around us must also extend to intentional examination of the historical and contemporary impact of our field on society and human history, even if those conversations are uncomfortable or painful. The history of our field of evolutionary biology includes extensive entanglement with eugenics and white supremacy, and thus has served as a driver of social inequality. To this day, genetic research and the concept of genetic determinism are misused by white supremacists and distributed in the popular media.
The focus of this symposium will be an examination of modern evolutionary genetic research and what it can, or cannot, tell us about variation, origins, and evolution. Speakers will address issues in three broad areas: i) the historical role of evolution as a promoter of inequality, ii) present-day challenges, and iii) best practices and future directions. The symposium will conclude with a moderated panel discussion including all speakers, who will address questions from the audience.

The annual Evolution meeting is back, and registration is now open!
The Evolution conference is the joint annual meeting of the American Society of Naturalists, the Society for the Study of Evolution, and the Society of Systematic Biologists. The meeting is one of the premiere opportunities for sharing research on evolutionary biology each year.
Evolution 2022 will be our first hybrid meeting, with a 2-day virtual conference (June 21-22) followed by the standard in-person conference (June 24-28) at the Huntington Convention Center in downtown Cleveland, OH. You can register to attend virtually or in-person, with the latter also including access to all virtual components.
Evolution 2022 will require all in-person attendees to be fully vaccinated and masked at the meeting. More information here.
In 2022, the optical networks market was valued at $14 billion and is predicted to grow beyond $28 billion by 2029. Evolving consumer needs and the evolution of wireless infrastructure are cited as common factors fueling market growth. Recent technological advancements, such as increased data center interactions and improved network access have enabled operators to offer ultra-low latent and reliable connections needed to provide the connectivity needed for data-rich use cases, such as IoT and AI, in addition to being a vital component of global 5G deployment. However, the industry still needs to address challenges relating to cost, scalability and security before optical network potential can be fully realized. As such, what role will optical networks play in next-generation use cases? How vital is it for 5G deployment, and what considerations do operators need to take when deploying their network?
Since the release of the 400ZR standard by the OIF in 2020, coherent pluggable optics have come on in leaps and bounds in meeting the growing demands of consumers. To date, much of the coherent pluggable discussion focuses on the newer 100G rate. At first glance, this may seem a downsize from its 400G and 800G predecessors, however it is said that the 400G and 800G rates carry too much capacity and cost to meet increased traffic at the edge. A recent survey published in Heavy Reading cited that over 75% of operators surveyed believed that 100G coherent pluggable optics to be important for their edge and access evolution strategies. As such, how far along are each of these transport technologies and how do they compare to one another? What are the pros and cons of the varying rates and what lessons have been learnt?
STAAR, which has been dedicated solely to ophthalmic surgery for over 30 years, designs, develops, manufactures and markets implantable lenses for the eye with companion delivery systems. These lenses are intended to provide visual freedom for patients, lessening or eliminating the reliance on glasses or contact lenses. All of these lenses are foldable, which permits the surgeon to insert them through a small incision. STAAR's lens used in refractive surgery is called an Implantable Collamer Lens or "ICL". More than 3,000,000 ICLs have been sold to date. STAAR has over 900 employees and markets lenses in over 75 countries.
