Parking Ratios for Cohousing Communities with Car Sharing

Hello Cohousing Car Sharing Enthusiasts! I'm facilitator of the Transportation Group for Rachel Carson Ecovillage (RCE). We're in the active development stage and hope to begin construction sometime this coming spring.

As part of our efforts, we plan to seek a zoning variance on minimum required parking spaces so we can reduce the size of our parking lot to make more beneficial use of the land. To receive this variance, we plan to argue that car sharing and plans for other alternative/shared mobility (biking, transit, etc) will significantly reduce the need for personal car ownership and thus parking.

Is there a resource that includes information on the ratio or actual numbers of parking spaces on site to cohousing households and/or residents? If not, I'm happy to compile the data in hope it would be useful to others as well as our community. Can cohousing communities with car sharing provide information on the number of spaces in your lot compared with number of households?

Hi Sam,

Thanks for taking this initiative.

We at Jackson Place Cohousing in Seattle started our car sharing in July. We have one car and 26 car parks in all. We intend to have  many more shared EV cars and EV bikes. Our ideal would be to have half the car parks shared.
