Joy --
Unilever’s dirty secret: Not many people know that 11 years ago, the Ponds India thermometer factory (owned by Hindustan Unilever), was caught disposing highly toxic mercury behind their factory in Kodaikanal, Tamil Nadu. Environmental groups forced the factory to shut down.
But the mercury had already poisoned many Unilever employees. 28 workers are dead and the survivors still suffer from headaches, heart problems and other health issues. What is worse is that hundreds of children continue to be born with physical and mental problems.
Dhanalakshmi Natarjan, whose husband and son died due to mercury poisoning, has started a petition calling on Unilever CEO, Nitin Paranjpe, to compensate those affected and clean up the mercury so that future generations are not affected.
Hindustan Unilever manufactures many products like Knorr soups, Pond’s cream, Taj Mahal tea, that are consumed by millions of Indians. They recently launched a Sustainable Living campaign to “Help more than 1 billion people take action to improve their health and well-being.”
You can directly mail Unilever CEO, Nitin Paranjpe, telling him to prove Unilever’s commitment by improving the health and well-being of their former employees who are still suffering.
If thousands mail him, Unilever won’t be able to ignore their unsustainable secret anymore.
Many of the workers are unable to support their families due to their failing health. Your support can help Dhanalakshmi and other victims get the compensation that they deserve. http://www.change.org/petitions/ceo-managing-director-hindustan-unilever-clean-up-unilever-factory-in-kodaikanal-and-compensate-the-victims
Thanks for taking action,
