Is there a linux edition of the ISE version you mentioned?
I checked on the website, they have a free WebPack for students. See if it is enough for your purpose.
Else you could try wine though I doubt it will run something as heavy as xilinx.
I also have never tried install the webpack, but since it is available for linux I suppose myself and others from the group can surely help you install it.

Wine 1.3 can run almost anything :)...
To install wine 1.3 do the following.

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-wine/ppa     //adding ppa repository

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install wine1.3

But it would be better if you could do this without wine. Can you post the installation problems you are facing?

<http://stefan.endrullis.de/en/xilinx_ise_8.1.html> seems to provide
the installation guidelines for a specific kernel.

I have the original DVD and I simply ./setup from the XIlinx ISE/EDK
DVD. The install was successful on one of my old F12 machines but on
F13 its giving me the following error :

[root@sue-lappy Xilinx]# ls
3rdpartyinstalls bin idata setup xinfo
autorun.inf doc installer setup.exe xinfo.exe
[root@sue-lappy Xilinx]# ./setup
/media/Xilinx/bin/lin/setup: error while loading shared libraries:
libstdc++.so.5: cannot open shared object file: No such file or
directory
[root@sue-lappy Xilinx]#

Still finding some way out...
