Hello everyone!

As you might have seen in the previous threads, a Basic Ubuntu Workshop was planned for the first year students on March 28, 2012.
Here's a report of how things went..

Approximately 60 students attended the workshop, thanks to the phenomenal publicity done before the workshop by all the volunteers :)

The workshop started with an Introduction to the world of FOSS, motivating the attendees to use FOSS.
It was followed by a session explaining the GUI in Ubuntu, the Compiz Config Effects, with a motive to tell the attendees that Linux has a funny side as well and you don't need to do only serious things in it. :)
Then came a session on Package Management in Ubuntu. We showed them some common ways of installing packages.
The workshop culminated with a session on Vim. We motivated the students to users to use Vim and demonstrated how powerful it is. :)

In my opinion, it was an informative session with the only drawback that it got a bit delayed. Sadly, we had to send around 6 students back as there was literally no place in the Lab. Looking at the enthusiasm of the first-year students, we might plan a session soon for the ones who missed it :)

We would like to thank Lokesh and Payas for their support before and during the workshop. :)
Also, a big thank you to all the volunteers for their time and efforts. :)

I agree with Pratik about the duration of the workshop. However, that doesn't matter, as the speakers presented their contents effectively, though it was the first time for most of them. Congratulations all speakers and volunteers! Many many thanks to Lokesh and Payas, without whom the meaning and purpose of the workshop would not have reached the students.

Really a good effort everyone ! Congrats :)

Sorry that I could not be present for the workshop :(

It would be nice, if you can get some of the first year students to write their report on the mailing list.

Indeed a great effort by all the SY-students. Congratulations to all the speakers & coordinators for making this successful :)

Specially they took efforts in doing nice publicity of the event, hence we had 60+ students on that day in the lab & turned back around 10 people.

@all SY-speakers : please one of you get all the presentations & share it here.

PFA the combined presentation. Sorry for the delay as it took time for everyone to respond. The theme and font might not be uniform. Please ignore it.

Sir, I've asked Kinshuk, one of my friends from FY to do the same. He'll send a report soon.

Slide 9, Features of FOSS says

"Use it in his project without any need to ask the person who
developed that software."

It implies only boys do projects, I guess it was not intentional, I
suggest it be changed to

"Use it in his/her project without any need to ask the person who
developed that software."

or it is a common practice to use plural forms to make it neutral gender,

"Use it in their project without any need to ask the person who
developed that software."

On Slide 26, Dreamweaver vs Drupal/Joomla is not a correct comparison.

#1 Please put a revision number for your presentation.

#2 Mention the license under which one can (re)use the presentation.

#3 It is "Ubuntu" and not "UBUNTU". (slide #5)

#4 IMHO, Ubuntu is a distribution, not an OS. (slide #11, slide #14)

#5 Alternative to Eagle is gEDA/KiCad. (slide #26)

#6 It is "Queries" (slide #31) and not "Querries..??". What's with the
"..??" ? Please do a spell-check on your slides.

#7 Please don't use all-caps when writing, unless it is an acronym. It
literally means you are shouting at the person reading it. (slide #43)

"BEST OPTION IS TO ASK YOUR QUERY ON COFSUG ITSELF & U WOULD GET
APT REPLIES BY MANY SUCH FOSS-BELIEVERS !!"

#8 It is CoFSUG and not COFSUG. (slide #43).

Alrite. But where should I mention it? At the end of the presentation?

It has been stated that it is a distribution as well in the first bullet on slide #11.

#5 Alternative to Eagle is gEDA/KiCad. (slide #26)

All done!

Please just let me know about the license thing. I've made all the other changes as suggested by you and Praveen. Will upload the updated version after your reply. :)

Please use a free/open source documentation license like GNU FDL or CC.

It will be good to mention it in the first slide along with the author
names, version release, so people know that they can re(use) it giving
credits to your work.

I've added GNU FDL in the first slide. PFA the version 2 of the presentation. Please do let me know if any other changes need to be made.

#9 It will be good to mention the version in the first slide, in case,
the presentation (alone) is made available online and the filename
will be lost.

#10 You might also want to export the presentation to a .pdf file for
circulation.

#11 There are three slides 49-51 with the same content - "Useful Resources".

Kudos for the effort taken in making a presentation!

PFA the same alongwith v3.0 of the presentation.
