Yes.
Did you installed Ubuntu?

Process 1: (Interesting)

1. Usually HP mini books preinstalled with Windows come with only one partition. If yours is the same case, shrink the drive (http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/resize-a-partition-for-free-in-windows-vista/).
Note the size of the new partition.

2. Borrow a USB boot drive from a friend or create one yourself (http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/)

3. Change BIOS setting to boot from the USB device (http://pcsupport.about.com/od/tipstricks/ht/bootusbflash.htm)

4. Boot from the USB and do a manual install on the new partition

Process 2: (Um... uninteresting)

1. Burn/Borrow ubuntu disk, install inside windows.

The danger with that is if anything happens within MS-Windows, then
even your ubuntu partition will suffer.

What would be recommended is Piyush's idea.

@Apeksha for how much did you get the Atom thingie ?

I understand that HP makes a mess with the hard disk provided and also
that its quite a task to get it to dual boot hence my suggestion
would be to install ubuntu on a SD Card and instead of selecting dual
boot from the grub menu , you can do it from bios .

SD cards come very cheap 600 for 16 GB . Hence boot into ubuntu via
USB( use unetbootin) while installing instead of hard disk just select
the card and you will be fine, you need not even bother about
partitioning .
Once you are very comfortable you can happily format the windows off
the machine and make it single boot or even do those cumbersome steps
to make it dual boot .

Hope that helps .

Hey, I didn't get you, how does HP mess with the hard disk provided?

and also

boot from the grub menu , you can do it from bios .

partitioning .
Once you are very comfortable you can happily format the windows off
the machine and make it single boot or  even do those cumbersome steps
to make it dual boot .

This seems to be a good idea, but will Ubuntu then instal the grub on the SD card or on the hard disk, and will it detect Windows if it install the grub on the SD card?

Hope that helps  .

No, I'm not feeling shy to share my netbook prize in public, In little prize i got better than others.
Go for it really good
there is one more version hp mini210 additional features Beats audio+ web cam resolution etc
prize around Rs. 20,000

I Got Hp mini110 in Rs.17,500 Laptop+10 accessories+ Pouch
From Geonet IT MALL ,Tilak Road.

My requirement was
1) Lightweight- Very important so i dont feel a burden when carrying it.
2) HDD-320 is sufficient for any Computer/ IT professional (Most of laptop space is full of movie/songs etc) its reality.
Autocad, catia, proE kind of design software needs high processor speed, RAM & HDD capacity.
3) Its very handy.
4) Dell has stop production for inspiron mini-Its not supporting win8(I m not really interested in win8) nothing great(Just like google croma feel)
5) Waste of money of someone is going for windows8 (even any version of windows).

Apeksha,
Share with me how much it costed you to buy this netbook, if you feel
shy about sharing the price on-list.
I am looking to buy a netbook of similar configuration in the near future.

Sorry for my usage of words , By "mess" I mean creating 4 primary
partitions and mostly give access to only 1 and also insert a backup
partition instead of a DVD ( I am prett sure that HP saves money by
not giving Removable media ) .
Also the whole set of pre installed software are a mess . It took me 2
hours to uninstall all the nuisance it came with .

It depends on where you want the GRUB to be , SD card is just like
another hard disk ! Grub should be able to detect windows during
installation , else update grub afterwards , either way you are fine .

But isn't that a property of the MBR, is HP involved in any way in the way primary partitions are present or can be created on a hard disk?

I agree with you, but then we can go for a PC with only MS-DOS installed on it, though this option is not always available.

Will have to try this out sometime later.

The discussion seems to have taken a different turn and your problem remains unaddressed. AFAIK, there are not many problems with dual booting on HP laptops.

For making a pen-drive bootable, you can use Startup Disk Creator in Ubuntu (from one of your friends lappie) or Unetbootin (which is available for both Windows and Linux - http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/).

Lets us know if you have any problems.
