Hello people,
I was looking for a nice car racing game ( FOSS ) and thus came to know about vdrift and TORCS. But i want to run them on my PC ( 5-6 years old and with absolutely primitive graphics support), I had to drop TORCS which is one of the most popular games.....
But as tried to run vdrift..(first i did install all the packages and all.... it got installed) the game window opened for a second and i got following error messege...:

ERROR: Error loading non-shader render configuration file: /usr/local/share/games/vdrift/data/shaders/render.conf.noshaders
vdrift: src/graphics.cpp:697: void GRAPHICS_SDLGL::DisableShaders(const std::string&, std::ostream&): Assertion `0' failed.
SIGABRT detected, releasing the mouse
Aborted

pls help me to get rid of this.......

I installed many QUALITY games ( like alien-areana and assault cube) but each time i was left frustrated as they demanded some good quality graphics....

Can someone suggest a GOOD game not requiring such high level graphics???

Good games like quake 4 and nexuiz are available for linux. Also many steam games are also compatible with linux but make sure you install the GPU drivers.

@Devwrat: The binary must be placed in the build directory.

Please refer to http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-1534140.html
if you get stuck :)

@ Devwrat : Very sorry I took so long to reply. I was
compiling(because debian does not have a package for it yet :P ) and
trying out different configurations of vdrift so I could better answer
your query.

Firstly have to downloaded the vdrift-data along with the game ?
You can check this out in /usr/local/share/games/vdrift/data/
If the data folder does not exist then the "data" was not downloaded
along with the game.

What is "data" and why is it needed ?
I am guessing what you downloaded (around 140MB) is only the game
engine + game logic.
Other things like the supporting .png files, track information, car
parts and car information is distributed separately.
This is done with many packages which large amount of data (in our
case more than 2.5 GB :) )
So in order to play the game you must also download the data package.
Now I don't know the package for Ubuntu but you can directly download
the latest version of the data files directly from svn (A version
control system)

The complete data is around 2.5 GB and has more than 42 tracks from
all around the world and some 50 cars :)

The "shaders" folder is also there in this data folder / package.

How do I download this data ?
You can clone (in git terms) or checkout (in svn terms) from the svn
VCS and follows.
In your home directory or which ever directory you feel comfortable
run the following command after installing svn

svn co https://vdrift.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/vdrift/vdrift-data
vdrift-data

** Important : First visit the link from your browser :
https://vdrift.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/vdrift/vdrift-data
** You do not need to download all the tracks and cars. You can select
what you want to download. But in this case you will need to checkout
each repository separately (Not recommended).
** You can collect the data files from me when you are college if you
do not want to download 2.5 GB.

Once that is done just create a soft link using ln -s in
/usr/local/share/games/vdrift/data --> <to the location were you have
checked out the repository>

If your download gets interrupted no need to restart from the
beginning. Just run

>> svn up
That will update the repository and start from were you left it. You
can also do this is future if you want new tracks or cars.
Please be patient with svn up it takes some time to populate the
file(s) information.

Drop is another mail if there are any further problems. :)

Hi all,
Shravan was going last night through some of the older COFSUG
threads and missed this one. It seems you tried it out. When you
checked out the vdrift-data directory, were you able to see a license
file in that directory. If not, were you able to ask the devs. under
what license are the art assets under ?

Looking forward for info.

Hi,
The folder does not have a License file in it. Different components in
the folder
are licensed under different licenses. Some of the tracks are licensed
to EA Sports
and Sony. Most of these copyright files can be found in the tracks
folder. As far as
the various car models go there is no mention of the original author.
This has lead
the Debian community to believe that these files have been taken
without the prior
permission of the authors and hence it had resulted in the removal of
the vdrift-data
from the tag database. It also seems that they have removed from testing and
unstable as no other package referenced them as a dependency. I am not
sure about
experimental as I do not pull from experimental . As far as notifying
the developers
goes the original developers are not responsible for all the data
related contents
of the game. This is the prime reason why open source games are always packaged
or distributed as two separate entities - The game logic and the game data.
This issue was raised in the Debian community and after careful
discussion it was
decided to remove the vdrift-data package from the Debian Repository. Ubuntu
still has the package owing to its lax attitude towards various
licenses and copyright
notices and also because Ubuntu pulls from Debian only during the
release of a major
Ubuntu version. On a side note vdrift now uses vdrift-minimal and vdrift-full,
a complete bug report can be found at :
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=398678
However recently I was unable to find the vdrift package in debian
stable or experimental
repository so I am unsure about the future of this package.
Hope this information was helpful. Fell free to ask questions.

Sorry no idea why icedove has destroyed the formatting of my previous

Shravan Vdrift all packages were removed from Debian looong ago that
is in 2007 and I hope you remember we discussed about this and you
were to write to the past maintainer of the package (member from
debian-games)

Relevant link stating removal -
http://packages.qa.debian.org/v/vdrift/news/20070612T094206Z.html
Bug report which was raised for this -
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=420965

So I don't know how Ubuntu is still having the package, this might be
added to Ubuntu specific repository because it was removed from Debian
in 2007 so it should have gone from Ubuntu too.
