Yeah I'm yet to really sink my teeth into it too.

There are a number of techniques to manage image/video assets.

Fluid Images
http://www.alistapart.com/articles/fluid-images/

... I just finished reading Ethan's book and REALY it's awesome.

I also like these two little projects:

I think a combination of an EM based "container" div & EM based media query breakpoints give a more suitable "content first" scale to things... and then all the inner elements width's based on percentages % ... (because nested EM's for widths could be a real pain!).

Also LESS / SASS should help manage the calculations... e.g. https://github.com/paulmist/responsive.less/blob/master/responsive.less

I've always wanted to do a pure em/ex-sized layout, but have been too
chicken. Maybe now's the time. Unfortunately, most of the time the
design you're given is constrained by bitmap elements, and once one
pixel length is introduced to a design, it starts to spread like a
    cancer.

Also been interested in the potential of using node.js for doing large
file upload/downloads without tying up Apache processes (or
bootstrapping Drupal). Looks like some people are already using it for
other purposes in Drupal (http://drupal.org/project/drupalchat), but
    it's very bleeding edge.

    Matthew.

Grigsby also has an interesting couple of posts regarding the
responsive images problem:

I think images are the real sticking point at the moment....

It's a great post that one... I've actually got a comment on there
already - http://www.cloudfour.com/responsive-imgs-part-2/#comment-33681
... I want to work on a light weight noscript + lazyload solution...
when time permits :-P

But that post is really just addressing the issue of responsive "file
size".

When it comes to "fluid images" ... i.e. grow and shrink ... then max-
width:100% is your friend ;-)

... CSS "background-size" will also solve the background-image resize
issue - it has pretty good browser support - http://caniuse.com/#background-img-opts

Got to love a challenge ^_^
