Due to SJ Function, it looks like we all want to take deep dive in memories and for that matter remain there!!  Had started egang yahoo group back in 2000 but we never saw burst of so many mails/communication going on for such a long period.

So on same note would like to share about Tanay going back in memory….

In 1993, Tanay used to visit US (at that time only me and my wife) in NJ on weekends. I really liked to see such a close friend close by as we were completely new to USA. But I was amazed to see different Tanay than our B-TOP Tanay.

He was so much caring and I felt become much more emotional. The same feeling I had when I visited his house and family in Portland.

 Tanay can you share more on your 44 issued Patents, when you have time.

Avya is built to lead.  He used to lead all treks.  Many of the dangerous stunts I did were following him.  Many of us went to Mysore for air force selection with Avya.  He passed and was selected  I tried to fail the starting electronics test but could not.  but anyway failed to qualify later.  Satish Godbole was also selected as a pilot officer then.  Not sure if he joined.  I must say it was an experience of a lifetime.  Should have taken it more seriously than drinking neat old monk every night at a bar outside that air force compound.  Among many other things that I never did and do not take seriously.

About Mukund, I am especially proud because he is not a gujju (sorry Paresh).  But it is not easy for Marathis to succeed. We (and Bengalis) are wired for creative writing and creating stage plays, not businesses.

 

Those of you who do not know Mahesh's achievements, please visit his house in Pune. He is being modest. 
US memory:  Suren, Mahesh, Suhas, Anil, Milind Joshi (am I missing anyone?) got together at my sister's place in New Jersey in 1999.  I can dig but does anyone else have pictures from 1999?  We definitely took a picture when we met last time at Pune in 2011.  We can load all of those to our newly formed Google group, if there is a photos area. 

Abhay, (and ex-yahoos Aamod, Sudesh, Vishakha), Yahoo does a lot better job for groups web interface.

This is really great achievement Mukund. If I am not wrong Mukund never (or may be minimal) worked for anybod !!, so he is the senior most entrepreneur.

Yes Sandeep.  We all loved this SJ. Thanks a lot Uma and Hemant for the big contribution in making this a success. It was such a grand function.

Prof Sawant really insisted us on attending Firodia Ekankika and with little reluctance we attended. And what a event that turned out to be. It was absolutely out of the world. We all thought the talent and creativity unlimited is too good to be called as Engineers.

 

Also for people who didn’t attend, our following classmates got a SPECIAL mention and Great appreciation and ovation:

Just reached Mumbai after an Awesome Silver Jubilee function!! Indeed Great to meet some of you after 25+ years!

True, Hemant. The Ekankika performance was unbelievable. Touches a serious subject, but packed with a Great  direction, art, craft, singing, dancing, Sand animation, puppet show, technology & what not.

We were told this was unprecedented turn out & highest ever corpus collection!!

Uma & Hemant were part of core group organizers!! They did fabulous job, as usual!! Three cheers to them. Three cheers to COEP 87!!

I hope, we don't wait for Golden Jubilee function to meet again!! Surely not.

Shashank ( Nana) gave 2-3 notebooks back to Anil and Sanjeev which is borrowed 25 year back -:)

 

Anil showed some old photos from our Arvi trip ( with Prof Shah) and Sinhagad trip. He is refusing it to scan and send.. He will give everyone a copy of it when we visit his place in Nasik. We have to sign on 100 Rupees stamp paper that we will not scan it and upload !

Yesterday's function was fantastic. Some of us never met in last 25 years...but got instantly connected. 

 

Around 18 from E & TC attended.  Harminder came from Amritsar, Shubhada & Uma came from Delhi, Suhas from Kolhapur, Sandeep, Satish and Sachin from Mumbai.

 

Prof Prabhu surprised us by bringing a cake for E & TC. That was amazing..Prof Sawant also joined. COEP got the award in Firodia Karandak.. They performed that show and it was mind boggling. Awesome !  The amount of creativity, music, script, acting was fantastic. Today, when 35-40 of us meeting informally at boat club and giving introductions, Madhu ( remember ?  Boat Club) was listening and then he talked for 2-3 minutes.. What he talked was really touching.

 

I will create a separate google group for 87-E&TC so that all of us can stay connected. 

 

Uma has put in a lot of effort for this hence deserves a special thanks.

Eventually, we should compile these lists of our achievements :-) and make a master list. With answers identified with permission from the mystery persons. I remember doing campaigning for that movie (Chinatown) for the whole day - along with Sanjeev Phatak - because it had Rafi songs. The Kishore Kumar camp had more members (including you Sandeep and Jalya), and wanted to see Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi, but eventually was won over. I am very sure we did not play fair - and did some gafala in vote counting to make us watch that movie. (Typical line of argument - "B-top che ase tharalaye ....) Problem was the movie turned out to be quite bad - in spite of the well known song "baar baar dekho", other songs were just OK. Fortunately, both me and Sanjeev survived to see the next day. • One of us had defined the recipe of "Pav Sample" that was made at the boat club... thereafter few of us stopped eating it... Few probably tried to sneak in the kitchen to verify.
• How about one of us winning a challenge eating one's own Khapli (Jakhamewarchi... I mean dried wound)... !!
• One of the room mate had a habit of scratching his face while in his sleep. The other guy placed a slipper in his scratching hand!!
• C - Ground: One of had an habit of deep sleeping. His room mates used to have tough time waking him up after coming from Saturday afternoon snacks/ tea. Several times they had to go behind to the window and throw stones to wake him up... When this became a regular habit, they stopped knocking the door... They will only use stones instead of knocking the door. Poor guy... when used to wake up... would see only stones around on his bed!
• For no reason, we used to tease an old man (barber) and then hide. Once or twice, he cam to the rooms and gave his peace of mind!!
• One of us (movie freak) made a record to watch all the movie shows in a day (9 AM to 12 AM).... !! that too in different theaters... !!
• Once there was literally a fight (Actual mara mari) between the two... one of them staunch Amitabh Bachchan support and the other who was pulling his leg stating AB is not so good actor.
• Once entire B top decided to watch a movie together. There were 2 opinions... which one to watch. We spent almost half a day in taking votes from everybody..

The list goes on.... Looking forward to meeting many of you on 23rd.

In the antakshari competition semi final one of us sang a song for the character 'Ch' as chimati hui ghadi and we made thro' to the final! 2. during the lecture one girl lost her chappal because one of the guy sitting begind took that and passed it all the way to out of the class on Pune bombay road!3. And yaa. that  'Disali Disali..... ' incidence during one of the lecture! 4. During the lecture somebody brought mechanical skeleton fold-able long enough to go from last bench to first bench and suddenly Prof turned to class and it was resting on the shoulders of the guy on first bench to last bench.5. Boatclub pakode on Saturday morning after lecture of Prof. Kokate that used to finish from 8:00 am to 8:20 am!just to be in time for the pakode!!6. Panchaleshwar tea joint when we spent literally lots of money only for tea and Khari. Thanks to Tanay being Sports Sec.7. Drinking water from toilet dabba for the sake of one ecklair8. Playing 3 patti with some cash on stake in the night and hostel rector visiting the room. Obviously one person used to sponsor few of us to play 3 patti!  9. After Kojagiri Pournima one person slept for 30+ hours because of the hang over and we were worried for him a lot!10. During the final project oral one team members started fighting among themselves (Literally fighting!) Thanks and Regards,

Let's break the ice here, so here's a pop quiz - when was the last time you picked up a ceramic capacitor or adjusted your scope's delayed sweep?

It's very nice to be reminded of all of you again. Honestly I had forgotten most everyone on this list (sorry!). It's also nice that we all are still here and no one's upstairs - shows our batch is a healthy (and mischivious) lot!

I think Uma has done a fantastic job in taking the initiative to re-introduce us to each other again. Hats off to her. Now I am not sure why she suddenly decided to do this - I am sure she does not yet realize she is opening a can of worms! I thought she was so sick of seeing us hostel boys hanging around the girls hostel she would never want to be reminded of our names again :-) And whatever happened to "what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas and what happened in COEP stayed in COEP", like our experiments with electronics and delayed sweep among other things?

I live down here in southern Texas. If any of you ever swing by Houston passing this way to your Caribbean cruise or your business meeting at NASA or on your way to my local county jail, give me a shout and I will be honored to have you as my guest. Generally the accusations of snobbery have a root in jealousy at the coolness. We were cool, not snobbish, and that's just a fact. But I didn't know that girls were also jealous of us :-) (Now that's ought to rattle some cages).

Anyway, I was just joking. Please don't get me wrong.

I have a very poor memory when it comes to associating names with faces, but some scenes from the COEP days have been imprinted on my mind. So from these scenes, I have assembled this quiz :-) When you all get together, you can try to guess who the mystery person(s) is/are in these actual incidents.

This is very E&TC specific, so apologies to other branches.

1. Final year, on the day of oral exam for our project. Almost all of us had copied the design projects from someone from prev year, without
understanding anything. So our classmate was standing at the B-Top balcony with the journal in hand. If a page seemed too difficult, he would just tear it off and throw it away to make sure no question was asked on the diagram on that page. So some random pages went missing from the whole design. Of course, the examiners were as not-so-smart as us, so they didn't notice.

2. Second year, during election campaign, we were making posters on E-Top. One of our friends stepped on the still wet colored poster, and very sincerely tried to defend himself by saying "Poster war maaza paay padalaa, hyaat maajhi kaay chuuk ?". It became a popular mock excuse for many days from there on.

3. Prof Lagu was teaching electrical in the classroom near the workshop. After the attendance, when he turned his back towards the class, 2 of our classmates got up and tried to walk out of the door unnoticed. Unfortunately, at that exact time, the guy's chappal broke,
and it made big sound on the metal floor. Almost the entire class and the Prof Lagu turned around. The two brave souls had already committed themselves, so they still walked out.

4. Final year on B-Top. We all were trying to get one of us to say something, someone who was known for being very silent. After nearly an hour of being teased to say something, the only thing that came out of his mouth - "Aata gappa basaa, naahi tar phatke dein".

5. During many gappa sessions, there was someone who would just go to sleep while sitting there - sometimes even in the middle of his own sentence.

6. Final year - Someone whose only real hobby was sleeping, would always be late to class. Prof Pasalkar told him, either be on time, or stop coming to my class. The guy replied, OK, I won't attend from now on, turned around and left the classroom.

7. Final year, one of us who claimed to be a good photographer got his SLR camera and tripod and
set it up for a group photo. Almost entire class / building B - sitting/standing on entrance stairs. He kept on asking us to squeeze together, as we were not all fitting in the frame. It went on for a long time. When the photo was developed, we all were just in the center, with huge room on both sides - even the cycle stand was in the photo. (This guy was not really from E&TC, but was with us all the time.)

8. About using chappals/shoes from others, one specific person was notorious. He would always wear someone else's chappals, especially mine. (Hint, he is now a VP in some software company, so I am hoping he buys his own footwear now.)

Many other memories are simply not writable in a forum !

The Bombay crowd was the most civilized, we attended all the classes, did not make any noise.  We did not look at any girls.  We only read text books, never went to boat club. All professors loved us. 
 
Uma, one has to be in the class to be snobbish.  I remember a math professor did not add me to the low attendance list because I never existed. 
 
Prof. Sawant visited Portland few years ago.  His exact words "Tanay Karnik?  Tumhala pan US madhye yeun dila?  Ata tari seriously kaam karata ka?"  Somehow he had remembered many unwanted things. , e.g. .

 
Some more memories: 


illegally climbing/entering the auditorium building late at night
Abhay, Jalya, Avya used to jump over a hostel cot length wise (not just width)
Playing tennis on B top
Conveniently using each other's shoes, shirts (not the intimate apparel).  I sometimes had different left and right sandals
Lifting Jaggu's cot while he was sleeping on it and moving him to the bathroom
Mama Phadke running after a  burglar in his underwear all the way from G block to modern café
Soaps were hard to protect so we all bought Hamam that no one dared to steal
Bhalu's late night descriptions of life after death
C-top: making some people believe that there is a ghost by playing with the bathroom lights
I can add some bets [uncomfortable for the ladies to read] but refrain myself from writing those
bed bugs bed bugs and lots lots of them.

Friends, BTW...we had a Delhi batch 87 get together at my home on 14th March with Sanjeev Phatak, Avinash Deore, Vinayak Pai with wife n Sanjeev Pathania n wife. We missed Tarvinder. Singh is off sick due to typhoid and our prayers for his speedy recovery.

Hey all you fundu E&TC guys and gals,

Let's break the ice here, so here's a pop quiz - when was the last time you picked up a ceramic capacitor or adjusted your scope's delayed sweep?

It's very nice to be reminded of all of you again. Honestly I had forgotten most everyone on this list (sorry!). It's also nice that we all are still here and no one's upstairs - shows our batch is a healthy (and mischivious) lot!

I think Uma has done a fantastic job in taking the initiative to re-introduce us to each other again. Hats off to her. Now I am not sure why she suddenly decided to do this - I am sure she does not yet realize she is opening a can of worms! I thought she was so sick of seeing us hostel boys hanging around the girls hostel she would never want to be reminded of our names again :-) And whatever happened to "what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas and what happened in COEP stayed in COEP", like our experiments with
electronics and delayed sweep among other things?

I live down here in southern Texas. If any of you ever swing by Houston passing this way to your Caribbean cruise or your business meeting at NASA or on your way to my local county jail, give me a shout and I will be honored to have you as my guest. We can have a few beers together. Take care and cheers!
