Bill -  Today's 9/15/21 New York Times (A8) has an article by Jason Gutierrez and Dan Bilesky entitled "Philippines Fears Crisis In Education Is Deepening" which is disheartening (actually, de-souling) to read. .  And it has no mention of the Philipine Bishops or, even worse, Philippine Jesuits.  As we used to ask at St. Andrews, Quid Putas??? In the meantime, prayers and fond memories, jim kelly

23rd Sunday 2021

Warm Greetings to Family and Friends –

                                                 JVPs, ACMGs, Companions,

Ateneo Alumni/ae and Fordham Batchmates – Peace!

My first thought today and prayer is that all are well and safe. The overriding international concern is the continuing advance in many places of Covid-19, especially in the Delta form. This is a very difficult time for so many – especially for the poor and marginalized nations and their people. How to give vaccine to all?

This week’s Gospel is a wonderful story of Jesus healing a deaf man and giving him power to speak again. But for my own reflection, the emphasis is on the wonderful support by friends who brought the deaf man to Jesus.

That is basically the matter for reflection and prayer – our ability to be friends to others – in our own families and among our many companions – but can we be friends, can we support those we don’t know for those we have no name or even connection.

Within the context of our present world reality – I think of the Afghanistan situation – still unclarified up to this moment – and the situation in Myanmar and so many other countries that sample from the great difficulties of internal strife.

Can we bring all of these to the Lord –

Please take time for special prayer over this Gospel story. As possible, perhaps use a story for a few minutes of prayer two or three times during the week. Don’t let the opportunity to come before the Lord Jesus on behalf of others pass by.

As I end, I say “Thank You” to my editorial and email assistant – Vanessa Tan.

A remembrance in prayer for all –

Blessings – Father Bill, SJ

PS –  As you can, do not hesitate to share THE WORD with others

by email or some other app or even a printed version.  Thank you!

I found the NYT 9.15 article on my online subscription, searching “Philippines fear “ and writers’ Names.TEST OF AI PATIENCE & PLUCK.

Complicated. Looking to see SJ Philippine response.
Note: Jim, Just google “Ateneo de Manila” to start and you’ll be on your way.

Also, Does Fordham have a Philippine document section? At least someone I can talk to? I have a tiny trove of Martial Era stuff, from news articles to SJ Testimonies that tear your heart out. E.g. a 17 year old poll watcher inspired by Jesuits is kidnapped and disappears. Jim Reuter, SJ (once interned by Japanese) tells story.
