For me the singular event of the year was turning 86 on December 17. I found it mind-boggling that even while I still have trouble spelling octogenarian, now I have to learn how to spell nonagenariarian. I have a stair lift and I need a cane and a walking stick just to get around the house. But I take some comfort in several ageing dimensions. One is that Pope Francis has the same birthday and is only one year more infallible than me. And while my legs don't do their leg-work, my fingers do. I continue trying to write. This year my review of POPE FRANCIS, AGAINST WAR: BUILDING A CULTURE OF PEACE was published. The book was far more than interesting. It was daringly provocative. For example: He writes that the very possession of nuclear weapons is sinful and should be condemned, that there is no such thing as a just war, that we are currently in a horrifying war fought piecemeal and that authentic followers of Christ should exercise in their daily lives and promote politically a biblical non-violence. Well, from Pope Francis to the Kellyboys year is a big leap, but you can read bucketfuls about the Pope, but you can only hear about the Kellyboys from them.

James, as he is officially called, continues to travel the world with pals. Most recently to Romania, to see the castles in Transylvania; London and Port Isaac, for an old friend's wedding; and scuba diving in Turks and Caicos. He also completed his first two half marathons. He continues mentoring medical school applications, teaching a board review class, and working in both private practice and city hospitals. Here's my favorite Kellyboy story of the year.

While working on a review of Roger Haight SJ's THE NATURE OF THEOLOGY: CHALLENGES, FRAMEWORKS, BASIC BELIEFS, I asked James when and why he stopped believing in Santa Clause. He said about when he was in the second grade and that I was the cause of his losing Santa Claus faith. I had no idea that I had committed such a sacrilege and asked why and how. James explained that when I asked what he'd most like for Christas he said NINTENDO with a big screen. Then he tells me, I said no because that would just make him mentally lazy. Then he answers, "Doesn't matter because I asked Santa for it".. Then I commit the dumb dad sacrilege and say, "There is no Santa Claus; he doesn't exist". Does this paternal brutality place me in the top 10% of dumb dads??? But enough of Santa. You can download lots of Saint Nicholas data, but you can only hear about the Kellyboys when they tell you.

So, this Christmas and New Year we tell you that you are a singular and affirming part of our lives. We feel lucky and blessed. Our hopes and prayers for you this Christmas and New Year are anchored in faith, in hope, in trust, and in love. Our lives are better because you are such a valued part. Thank you.

We agree on Pope Francis. So we’re on the same team. 

BUT if you were US president, would you immediately decommission all nuclear weapons?
