Since he always distinguishes sense from nonsense, here’s something Bill would agree with: It’s hard to get anything exactly, but it’s easier to say what something is not. Some not-Bill items:  Bill is not someone who would ever say, “That’s only words”.   Good writing is succinct..  Succinctly put, the core for Bill is : Words matter”. True enough. But that comes no where close to getting to Bill’s Bill-ness. … Closer would be, Words matter because people matter.. And you can only tell people that they matter with words.. It’s like God had written on Bill’s face, “I’m a writer”.  In our Jesuit formation there was an internally famous Father Ed Cuff SJ who taught - rather, embodied - good writing.. So naturally he selected from a class of about 50 self-proclaimed best and the brightest our Brother Hanlon to be his beadle.. A beadle was the term employed to describe a Jesuit teacher’s first lieutenant, chief of the police, senior general, and first contact point with students.. Of course it was Bill.  And then later in life he was beadle for Mario Cuomo. And then for NY States’ Department of Human Services.. Here’s a fan-friend favor this octogenarian asks of Bill:  When you were young, did you know you would grow up to be a writer??? Did Ed Cuffe ever tell you why he picked you as his beadle rather than me????? Please, don’t answer that. I only wanted to tell you how much I treasure you as a friend. We are told good writing always ends with a further question: Here’s one for all of us: Do you notice that Bill, in all circumstances, always has a wry - can you think of a better adjective? - smile on his face. So, what’s he smiling at?

Jim,

You conclude, “So what’s he smiling at?”

My answer. Uncharacteristically succinct.
Bill Hanlon was born with his guardian angel tickling his funny bone and no one told the angel to stop, which Bill learned and accepted as a novice at St. Andrews one morning while meditatively making his bed.
