Sounds like this would be a subproject under DDF. We would give Jeff commit access to that repo as subproject manager.

Because it's so tightly coupled to DDF it doesn't make sense as a Codice Top Level Project. To give an example, Karaf has subprojects for Cave, EIK, and Cellar.

Thanks Kit & Michael. No problem on the email, just wasn't sure the best way to get in touch with the powers that be :)

The initial project is related to DDF and CDR (see service specifications at: http://www.dni.gov/index.php/about/organization/chief-information-officer/ic-cio-enterprise-integration-architecture). Basically it is to build out reference implementations for the CDR Specifications that will be deployable to DDF.

I will work on filling out the template. If there is anything regarding the DDF PMC org that will impact me please let me know!

Thanks again!

Yep, the proposal template is the right starting point. No need for a champion right now, but if the project is related to say DDF for example, it'd be good to get their input(even though I know they're in the middle of formulating the initial PMC organization). The process to get to incubation is rather short. The incubation process however depends on the state of the project, and its community, coming into the foundation.

We are going to update JIRA and Confluence shortly - and will likely add a few other services to the mix as well (e.g. SonarQube).

Thanks Jeff. Let me know if you have any specific questions. Sorry, I didn't see the original email toi...@codicefoundation.org<mailto:in...@codicefoundation.org> - I'll follow up on that too.

Subject: [codice] Starting a Project on Codice

I asked this question over email to the in...@codicefoundation.org<mailto:in...@codicefoundation.org> email address and I haven't heard back yet, so I apologize if this question is redundant.

I would like to explore getting a project or 2 setup on Codice. Is the first thing I need to do write a proposal as documented here: http://www.codice.org/contributing/proposal-template

Do I need a champion? If so how do I get one? Do you have an estimate of how long the process takes?

On a separate note, is it possible to get updated versions of Jira and Confluence installed? I am available to help the updates if you need extra help.

Thanks,
Jeff

Makes sense to me!

Once I submit the proposal, are there some governance details that you can provide.  What does being a sub-project mean vs a top level project, etc.?

Hi Jeff,

You actually wouldn't need to submit a proposal to Codice Foundation Board, simply start the conversation on the ddf-developers group.

A sub-project means that the project is tucked under an existing PMC, tools, infrastructure. It is basically part of the project but like the case of Karaf, the sub-projects are not distributed with the main project. If a subproject can live on its own and justify its own community, it would become a top level project. A good example there is all the top level Apache projects that came out of Lucene (like Hadoop out of Nutch, Solr, etc).

+1

Jeff, as an aside - Codice is really focused on existing projects, especially ones with an established community of some sort.  The intent is to provide a framework and sandbox for vetting and maturing a project to a level of standard expecting from successful OSS projects.  The incubation period is intended to create an environment where the community-at-large can help get the project there.  That said, we’re very interested in providing a home for emergent innovation where possible.  If the “idea” existed in some sort of specification - or even if the “idea” was well-documented enough were some sort of open community could grow around early/alpha implementation, we’d be willing to discuss.  Here, the community is the critical factor - meaning it would be essential that any work was funded across multiple organizations.  Hope that makes sense.

Thanks.
Kit

Thanks Kit & Michael,

That makes sense, and totally on board.  There is an existing community and work being done in this space and thus we have some stakeholders who would like to be involved as well.  If possible, would you all be able to support a quick call sometime in the next days/week?  I have questions on the following (and know some of it may still be a work in progress, just looking for details on where things are and where they are going)...
 - Status of existing Codice Board of Directors
 - DDF PMC structure, members, etc.  Where/How this subproject would fit in.
 - Committers on DDF Subproject.

Thanks!

Thanks!
