Hi All,

As you probably know from my earlier post/thread I am in the process of trying to figure out where to land some open source development that is developed for DDF, so naturally I gravitated towards Codice.  Outside of the synergy with DDF, I am having trouble answering the question of what the benefits are of using having my project be part of Codice.

Also if you all could provide updated details on the Codice mission, structure, Board of Directors etc. on the website. that would be great (assuming that info is public), and definitely help out.

Thanks!

Hi Jeff,

(this is something we'll put on the site)

Codice exists as a neutral place for defense (and other gov focused) contractors to collaborate on source code + providing governance and guidance on how to mature a project.

The problem we are solving is that most folks + other defense companies don't want to donate their IP (CCL) to a defense company who conceivably could take that IP and resell it. Also government sponsors desired source code to have some sort of governance structure around it. (side note: also there is a lot of source code out there that Apache, Eclipse, etc. won't touch).

You can just drop code out on github, but then you will have to govern it, etc. We are a young org, only started about a year ago., so we are figuring out how to make it run

we'll add to the site Monday, thanks!

BoD right not is Kit, Andy and myself.

Thanks John!  Definitely understand the growing pains!  And I definitely see the value of having a high level governance group, and please don't get me wrong I think the mission/value you stated in having a neutral place is awesome.  I assume the governance body is the Codice BoD, is that correct?  If so are there plans to expand the BoD to include others from industry, as well as (and probably more importantly) government and/or academia?  Perhaps even looking to other people who were involved in other foundations (e.g. Apache) and see if they would be interested?

Also, have you all thought about seeking out 501c3 status as a non profit?  Are your plans to stay a non-profit?  Personally I think having 501c3 status would help a great deal in making Codice more attractive to the community.

Thanks again for the feedback.  And definitely the more details you can put on the website about the governing body, the roles they have in the projects, etc., I think the better.
