Conference Call #dojocon

The long awaited Mentor Moot to be held in Limerick on 13th October is still calling for attendee's at http://conference.coderdojo.com. But more importantly for all Mentors and active Coderdojo Parents is that we are still researching key topics which can be introduced on the day. To have your say fill in the short questionairre at http://conference.coderdojo.com/survey/ he event is shaping up to be the event of the year. We have already had confirmed attendance from a groundbreaking robotics engineer, a cloud computing specialist, and some senior political representatives, aswell as Silicon Republic and even rumours of RTE. And thats not even for the speakers, so look sharp and tell everyone to book in as soon as possible, even with seating for several hundred people we are sure to be oversubscribed. Oh and tweet #dojocon. tweet

Digiweb Sites

We had several intial requests for Digiweb sites. These initial orders should go through shortly with Digiweb. In the mean time I have sent out several more requests to mentors who have offered their help to see if we can get more people working on the Coderdojo side to help confirm applications for domain names. You can read more about the services offered by Digiweb in this free package by clicking here http://hosting.digiweb.ie/docs/hsphere/userguide/.

New Dojo's Opening

There are Dojo's being opened every day by unsung heros in Communities big and small. I just wanted to say a big thankyou to all of you for joining the dream to teach every kid to code. Here are just a few of the newest launches I have heard about:
  • Glanmire, Cork (Supported by the GACA) Saturday 8th September 10am - 12am.
  • Birr (Technology Centre), Wenesday 19th September 5.30pm - late, Notable Dignitaries in attendance.
  • Silicon Valley (supported by Microsoft), Wednesday 26th September 7pm - 8.30pm, I know this isn't local to most people reading this in Ireland but I thought it was so cool I had to put it in here.

weforest gamification

We recently had a very cool proposal from Willcg to create a new game which will challenge corporates to donate money to help plant tree's. He is inviting anyone who is interested in helping him finish the development process to contact him directly. You can read more on this blog post here http://coderdojo.com/2012/08/29/weforest-org-gamification/

A meeting with Jack Lang (Original Rasberry Pie team)

For those of you living under a segamega drive and not yet heard of the $35 computer known as the 'Rasberry Pie' then this is big news. Jack Lang one of the creators will be visiting the NSC Coderdojo in Cork and has asked to meet a few of the kids involved in the movement. It would be nice to get a few kids from other Dojo's involved. So if this would be right up your street then drop me an email at lin...@coderdojo.com and we will see if we can fit you in. And yes he has said he has a few pie's lieing around his office he could bring with him. Dates Wednesday October 10th @ 12pm.

Udacity Meetup

Another online must see. Udacity is the highly successful online university which is teaching everyone from high school kids to grandparents how to program and do maths. There are courses such as 'build your own search engine' which I found very enjoyable. If you haven't already then go and sign up herehttp://www.udacity.com/ But more importantly than this, there will be an international Udacity Day taking place on Saturday 15th September. You can read more about it on the event bright site here http://www.meetup.com/Udacity/. If you are a mentor that has runs a dojo on a saturday then please step up and register a Udacity meetup for all udacity students to attend on that day at the same time as Coderdojo. Hopefully we will be able to get Udacity to support our efforts directly, either way this is a chance to encourage children to use a fantastic online tool.

Big Fish Meets Coderdojo

High flying Big Fish Developers took time out of their day to meet a group of keen Coderdojo goers in Cork and explain some of the fundamentals of game development. They Big Fish guys and gals where very impressed with the quality of programmers coming out of Coderdojo and asked to be kept updated on new games that anyone in the movement releases. See the attached picture to see who was involved...

Where's Wally James?

James has just headed back from the Aarann Irelands spreading the Coderdojo Magic as he goes.
